hi back to you !, it took me a year to get used to mine, seriously i could not stand to wear it because the pressure was too high , 27.5 lbs I am on a bi-pap machine because my apnea is so bad 105 apneas per hour, anyway i just couldnt wear it, when i getting ready for my gastric rny , they sent me to a pulminary doctor and he asked if i was using the machine, i told him i couldnt because of the uncomfortable air pressure, and he lowered it to 18 lbs in november and it took me a week to get used to it, now i sleep usually 5 to 6 hrs a night and feel much , hope i can get off of it soon after surgery !!!!, ps i wear a full face mask !!!! hang in there and keep trying , you will soon get used to it. curtis

Topic: cpap is irritating my nose
I have switched from the nose mask to the cannula style and that seems better. However, I still can't get used to the mask. It bothers my nose and I fidget more in my sleep than I did before. I wake up and my mask is on the floor. I hate it. I'm having surgery on Jan 20 and my doctor wants the mask on me for at least two weeks. Hello that is from today forward. I need help in keeping this thing on me. Should I try something to help me have a deeper sleep so I wont take it off? Or will doing that cause a problem for surgery? Thanks for any advice. Amy

Topic: Help with sleep study and coverage
I know i have some sleep disorder(central apnea). I live in calabasas. I did a sleep study when I had insurance and they found central , but needed another test. I have since moved and am now self employed with no health insurance, and its getting worse. HOw do I find a sleep center and what can I do for insurance options, any help would be great.

Sometimes, the big problem is masks that don't fit well or that are so uncomfortable that wearing them means you don't sleep. When I first had a sleep study, the techs were incompetent. They fitted me with a mask that was way too big. It also had complicated strapping. So I couldn't get it to fit and air leaked out of it and I was miserable. It also crushed my nose and really hurt my skin everywhere it touched me. If you have a mask that isn't comfortable, go to the people who service/rent your CPAP and tell them. They usually know a lot more about fitting the masks and selecting the right one than the techs (hospitals generally only work with one model of CPAP and one type of mask -- one size does not fit all in this case). I went through a phase of thinking that I was better off getting a little bit of bad sleep without the machine than no sleep at all with it. Those aren't the only choices! I have the nasal pillow now (it's tiny and just has soft tubes that fit in your nostrils). It's very comfortable. I'm having some problems right now, but I know I still need my CPAP. Apart from dying in your sleep, untreated apnea can also cause congestive heart failure. I don't want that. I'd rather sleep in the space gear

Topic: Apnea changes after WLS?
I had surgery three weeks ago. I was diagnosed with apnea in June. At the time, I weighed about 80 pounds more than I do right now (lost 45 before surgery and 35 after). Anyway, for the last two nights, I've had the apnea symptoms despite using my machine. The headaches are so bad they make me want to throw up. It's agony. I use the nasal pillow. If my pillow is older, could that be the problem? Also, I do need a new filter. I'm going to try and get these things resolved today, but wanted to know if I was covering all my bases. Three weeks out, I really can't go without sleep. I'll probably call my pulmonologist, too, just to be safe. I hate feeling this way. I also have horrible nightmares from the lack of oxygen (generally, about being killed violently). Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Lisa, Thanks so much for your reply!! My sleep apnea isn't that bad either, my machine is set at 6. I don't have a chin strap, I think I am doing okay without it. Now the first couple of nights I kept opening my mouth but now a few weeks later I probably only open once a night or so. Maybe I will call and get one I will see. I have the mask that fits into my nostrils. My nose hurt so bad the first week but now it isn't to bad, I guess I am getting use to it. Thanks again for all your advice, it is much appreciated!!!! Topic: RE: Sleep Apnea after WLS!
Hi Becky, First of all, congratulations on the weight loss! I haven't had surgery, but I have been using a CPAP for a few months now. I, too, had headaches when I woke up and wondered how the heck you get a headache when you are asleep. I now know it was from the sleep apnea. My sleep apnea isn't that bad compared to others (my machine is set at 8). At first I didn't notice that much of a difference and while I still have not had the wow moments some have had with the CPAP there are some things I have noticed since using it. I seem to be able to sleep for longer periods of time without waking and I definately am not choking in my sleep like I used to. It would feel like my throat was closing and I would choke and stop breathing and wake up. I don't have that anymore, Thank God. As far as the machine goes, give it some time. That's the advice I got and I've found it to be true. I'm still getting used to the mask, and some days it just feels like it will never fit right. I've also had some trouble with the chin strap irritating my skin (See my other post below). But I do know that I feel better when I use it so I keep using it. There are also different kinds of masks, etc. you can try so it's all about finding what works best for you. As the tech who came and set up the CPAP machine for me said, "Welcome to the club!" Good Luck!

Last week my brother-in-laws father died in his sleep because he did not wear his mask.. I know I am sometimes guilty of this , sometimes I will say to my self , "I'll just lay here for 5 minutes than I will put it on ." I usually wake up later that night gasping for breath . PLEASE PLEASE Do not do this . My new rule is put it on then lie down. thanks for reading lisa p
