Topic: RE: im scared
Hi Karyn! Just saw your post and wanted to reassure you that you will be okay. Make sure to use your cpap every night ... It amazes me when people do not use their machines, and yes, you can die if you do not use it. Besides, you will feel so much better once your apnea is treated, and it will be one more step toward better health for you! This really is wonderful news! Good luck!
Topic: RE: no apnea but .....need oxygen
Yes, I have the same thing as you but cannot remember the name of my disorder. I do have mild sleep apnea, but my oxygen levels are low all night long even though I am breathing; the doctor said it is b/c there is so much fat in my abdomen (my bmi is 48) that my diaghram cannot move as freely when I sleep. Anyway, my insurance won't pay for a cpap even though the dr recommends it b/c it is "mild," so my doctor put me on oxygen at night (at the number 2 setting). I feel soooo much better! I sleep more soundly, have more energy, and no longer feel like I am in a "brain fog." Instead of waking up repeatedly, I wake up one time to go to the bathroom. What a wonderful change!
Topic: RE: Couldn't sleep during sleep study for Sleep Apnea...
I am surprised that they didn't let you take your sleeping pills. I had a sleep study done recently, and they told us to do what we normally do at home (you can even drink alcohol, eat food, take sleeping pills). I would talk to the doctor and have the test repeated and insist on taking sleeping pills if that is what you are used to doing. Good luck!
Topic: Couldn't sleep during sleep study for Sleep Apnea...
Has anyone else had this problem? I couldn't sleep at all and I don't think they got a proper sample of what my sleep is like for the test. I was supposed to have a split study test. I had the worst time falling asleep and when I did fall asleep it wasn't for very long and I'd wake up and struggle to fall back asleep again. I was tired... I just couldn't sleep. At any rate... this all could have been prevented had the sleep study techs let me take a sleeping pill like I had asked. My doctor had pre-authorized that I could take it even, so I don't understand why they wouldn't let me have it. I hardly slept. Thus, I never had the CPAP put on, and the tech said I didn't snore!!! Both my parents and my significant other give me crap about my snoring all of the time... I just don't know what to do. Any suggestions or has anyone else run into this problem?
Topic: RE: Sleep Lab tech here...
Shannon, I just had my second sleep study/titration last week and I should get the report back on that at the end of this week. The first study said that during REM I had 35 instances of OSA but my biggest problem was PLMs. I don't remember exactly the number, but something like 245 PLMs. I know that my legs were aching because I had to drive over 1 hour to the study and my legs always hurt me after a long car ride. I feel that was the major factor in the PLMs. Anyway, during the titration, the tech told me that I was very low pressure. He said that it was a 5. Do you have any guesses as to whether I will have to be on a C-Pap for very long after WLS? Do you think it would be better for me to rent one or buy one?

Topic: RE: Using CPAP after surgery
I have severe sleep ap and am supposed to use a bi-pap with a setting of 16/10.
Within two weeks after surgery the pressure of the air filling my stomach was so intense I called the dr, my primary, my insurance company and the oxygen supply company that provides the bi-pap. That was back in October. They all told me to keep using it as long as I could each night until I could get in for a new sleep study (was supposed to be within another 2 wks).
For whatever reason I guess they never scheduled the study because I have made dozens of calls and am still waiting...finally gave up on the machine and I sure feel a difference. As much as I hate it, I think I need it still- just at a lower pressure.
But that doesn't happen to everyone, as you can see from here- most people don't notice a difference in the pressure in terms of their stomachs.
Topic: RE: Have sleep apnea and WLS surgery question
I had to bring my bipap with me to the hospital and a tech from respitory therepy came by each evening to hook me up. No big deal.
Topic: RE: Have sleep apnea and WLS surgery question
When I had my revision they made me bring my CPAP with me. They were suppose to put on me in the recovery room but never did. I did use in the hospital at night. The Dr. suggested that my head be raised up in recovery so that helps too.
Topic: Have sleep apnea and WLS surgery question
I have a bipap and wondering how the machine is used post operation for any of you who have gone through this with a cpap or bipap. Specifically, right after surgery while still in the hospital.
Thanks,
Jim
