Topic: RE: sleep apnea/c-pap advice... post lap-band sugery
My sleep apnea dr. told me to come in after I had lost 60 lb. Ineed to lose 150! I am having lapband surgery July 3, so I will continue as I am until 60 pounds. He did not say I would have to do another sleep study. Ned

Any urine retention? If not, restricting of the pulmonary vasculature may cause a back up of blood and then pedal edema, doubtful that would be it, but if it was something like that it would be from your pressure setting being to high and compressing the alveoli against the pulmonary vasculature. Like a said, very doubtful but possible.

Thanks for the info. It realy helped. I have been on the CPAP for 1 week and I am amazed at what it si doin. I had to go in the hospital for a different problem Friday and spent the night for observation. I had my machine with me. My Oxygen level never went below 94%. What really amazed me was my heart rate had gone down noticeably. They had told me that might happen at the sleep center but I was still amazed! I am feeling much better during the day!

Topic: CPAP and feet swelling
I do not know if there is a relationship but my feet have been swelling since I started the CPAP. I love the CPAP and I now sleep all night. In the past I would get up several times a night to go to the bathroom. Now I don't but the feet are swelling!! Anybody have this problem?

I too am a new user less then a month. Pressure of 18 ramped up from 6 and a mouth breather. I had to get a device from the CPAP therapist to keep my month shut. Your insurance should cover it. With that I cam sleep all night with the CPAP. A couple of times I have woke up gagging and took off the CPAP but kept the mouth device on and my husband said I did not snore! However I love my CPAP most of the time. I sleep all night long now without getting up to go to the bath room. The only problem I am having is my feet swelling up and waking up with some swelling!! I am going to try to drink lots of water today and see if that helps. Oh and I was told that pillow mask would not work with a pressure of 18. It could be too much pressure going right into the nose. I do not know if this is true or not but that is what my Therapist said. I use a mask that fits only over my nose. Barbara

by the pressure being 18, that's the number that keeps you from having apneic events. Some machines have what's called a ramp option where it starts lower for more comfort and then increases to the set pressure. This may make for more comfort while falling asleep. As for the mask making you claustorphobic, there are other options such as nasal pillows that may be more comfortable for you. Hope this helps.

Topic: RE: question on sleep apnea
I did get the cpap last week because i have obstructed sleep apnea and ive been using it, but i wake up in the midle of the night and get scared (claustriphobic using the nasal botton) so i take it off. there was one night i did keep it on all night and that was during the cpap sleep study and the tech saw that it was hard for me to get back to sleep so she turned it down and said that i was in REM in a matter of seconds, but the presure had to be up to 18, what does that mean?? thank you for all your advice Paula

Ask your doctor about another sleeps study,t hat would be the best way to determine if your pressure is too high now.

Topic: RE: question on sleep apnea
Kinda late ont his post but hope it helps. Sleep apnea can be contributed to 3 different factors. There is obstructive sleep apnea where the soft tissues in your throat and neck become relaxed and block air passages during sleep. There is Central sleep apnea where there is no effort to breath for short periods during sleep, and there is a combination of both. With obstructive sleep apnea a cpap machine that uses a constant positive pressure kind of holds open that soft tissue that normally relaxes so you can breath. With central apnea studies show minimal advantages with the use of bipap, which is like cpap but the pressure goes even higher during inhalation. I'm a respiratory therapist, so if you have any more questions, just ask away, if i don't know the answer, i know somebody who will.
