Topic: RE: DO I NEED WEAR MY CPAP AFTER SURGERY??
I sleep with the CPAP and my husband is supposed to use his too. He has had major problems trying to adjust to it and has been fighting it for the past 6 months. I started using mine on 06/26/06 (the beginning of my restful nights) and immediately took to it. I'm able to sleep through the whole night with it on. Jennifer at Legacy told me he better get with the program and get used to it, because it will be required after surgery. So it's kind of weird they are restricting you. You might get a 2nd opinion on that. I'm too afraid not to sleep with mine anymore...since I found I stop breathing 40 times an hour when I"m in REM.

Topic: RE: Impossible to sleep without my CPAP
Loretta, I can fall asleep without my CPAP but I try to never let that happen. It makes me too nervous. Seeing the date you first posted this, I can see that you are back to using the CPAP. How are you doing? Blessings, Susan

I have surgery next week and use a CPAP for my mild sleep apnea. Can you use the CPAP without danger of damaging the new pouch? I am going to get clarification on it before surgery on Thursday. Some information has been told me that I have to wait 4 months before resuming the use of the CPAP. What do you all know about this? Thanks, Susan

I'm with you Mary. I've just never been able to get used to it. I have a Bipap and use the Swift pillows rather than a full face mask, buy I just can't sleep with it. I end up staring at the ceiling all night. I've even tried Nyquil and all it did was make me "dopey" all the next day but still couldn[t sleep. Ive finally given up

Topic: RE: CPap related to my gas problem?
October 6th is my surgery date. I also have a mask that goes over my nose. I think about the swallowed gas hurting the pouch might be a question for the surgeon to answer. I am pretty sure this is a common issue for many patients.

I never did get an answer from them. They acted as if this was the first they heard of it. And my PCP just laughed at me (I can laugh at myself, so that's ok!) I did get an email from someone up here and she said that the problem could lie with my face mask. Since I have one that just goes on my nose, I am trying to breathe through my mouth. Even with the chin strap, I'm breathing through clenched teeth! I've ordered a full mask, but still wondering about whether or not swallowed gas can hurt the pouch. I figure I will just ask my surgeon when I see him the week before my surgery. I think I saw you on the October site, when is your surgery date? Blessings~ Nonny

Oh yes, I have been experiencing gas issues since I started on my CPAP as well. What did yu find out from your home health provider? Is it normal?

Have you tried the Mirage Swift mask? Make sure you are keeping your mouth closed if you are not using a full fase mask. I personally could not stand a mask over my nose, so I use pillows. Do a google on the mirage swift. Also, make sure you have a heated humidifer. Does the air feel as if it is putting out enough air?

Yes, But if you have it make sure you do your research on the type of mask your feel will work best for you and if your insurance is covering it, I would suggest you get your doctor to give you a prescription for a heated humidifer as well as the cpap/bipap machine. My oxygen was very low and I also have to have an oxygen machine. Good luck.

Topic: Impossible to sleep without my CPAP
Hi, I have been on CPAP for about 5 years now. My problem is I can't even fall asleep, even for a nap without my CPAP. I've tried. I sometimes would just love to catnap in a recliner or bed without it but I can't. When I had my surgery, my doctor would not let me use it for 3 days. I had absolutely NO sleep. Does anyone else have this problem?
