I forgot to say that I am using the heated humidifer. My nose has no problem, just the dry mouth.

Topic: Dry Mouth
Good Evening, Everyone. When I use my c-pap machine, my mouth gets very, very dry. This happens several times throughout the night. I have to spit up some saliva to get my mouth. I am using the mask that covers just my nose. I used to use the full face mask and will be getting another full face mask soon. Thanks for any help. Warmly, Rosemary

Topic: Nasal aire problems
I've had the Nasal aire and it's really worked out ok. The noise doesn't bother me and the fit is great. The problem is the silicone tubing. Unfortunately I have oily skin and the soft silicone turns rock hard in about 2 months. That stuff is pretty expensive and I can't really afford to buy new tubing every 2 months. Any suggestions??? Also, my CPAP machine is about 6 years old and pretty basic. I see where everyone else seems to know what their settings are. I have no clue. I've never been told and wouldn't know where to find them.

Michelle, that's likely your "prescription" level or whatever it's called, and that is not related to your diagnosis. The range is from 5 being the mildest to 15 being the highest. So, you're down in the low range. I'm also a 6. I think you can relax, but your Doc will know best! Liz

Patricia, I use a unit from Respironics. Very small mask, just nasal. I also have oxygen with it. Did not take long to get used to it. I was so afraid I'd have a problem 'cause I'm a mouth breather at night, but it has just not been a big deal. The mask itself is pretty darned comfy. I also have a humidifier with it. I still tend to get nosebleeds (I live in Colorado and it's awfully dry here) but they don't seem as bad as they were. This is the website that shows what it looks like: http://comfortgel.respironics.com/ You might have to try several before you find one that works well for you. Liz

I just picked up a Hybrid for testing. The few minutes I had it on in the office were wonderful. I am a mouth breather and side sleeper, so getting a good fit wasn't easy. I like the mirage full mask, but if this works I will be ecstatic. As for how do you do it? Simple, I'm afraid of dying. That puts all sorts of things into perspective.

Topic: RE: I'm a respiratory therapist!!
Hi I am perplexed a bit about all the various postings I am reading regarding the cpap machine!!! I just recently completed the second phase of my sleep study. Initially I had to sleep overnight in the sleep clinic and was hooked up to all the wires, etc; following that appointment, I was sent a notice to schedule an appointment for a cpap study. During the second night, I was hooked up to the wires AND a cpap machine. As I slept this time the necessary measure of pressure was assessed. The technician (who was also a previous surgical nurse and is a respiratory therapist as well) informed me that the limit to set the cpap machine was 20 and that I had been set at 15. I also had to have a chin strap put on as I sleep with my mouth open. Now I have to contact a medical supply company which aligns with my insurance company (and preferably has a respiratory therapist on duty) to purchase the cpap machine. The sleep center will then send the company the prescription and a rep from the medical supply company is suppose to call for an appointment with me to train me how to set up the machine. Once I have been on the machine for a couple of weeks I have to meet with the sleep center doctor who is a neurologist to assure the settings are working in my favor. I am in the pre op stages for gastric bypass surgery. My surgeon will actually have the cpap machine on me during the surgery and will order for it to be used during my hospital stay. My perplexity is that I cannot understand how someone could have a cpap machine and not have the understanding of the what and how, etc. Just my portion to share .... s keep you safe, Wanda Mack

How can you breathe thru your mouth??? I can't. Don't tape your mouth shut...that sounds painful! what setting do you have? can you use "Ramping mode"? sounds like you need to be reset. Best Wishes!!

Topic: RE: DO I NEED WEAR MY CPAP AFTER SURGERY??
The air goes into your lungs not your stomach. You should be fine. My doc demands I bring my mask so that when I am in recovery I will not stop breathing...they don't use it during surgery.(they can't) You might find that after surgery you won't need it anymore but that is to be determined by your pulmonary doctor. Best wishes to you!
