Topic: RE: CPAP...for what???
Hi Lisa, just found the sleep apnea forum and noticed your post. Don't blame you a bit for feeling like it's another excuse to extract $$. I had a mild stroke back in 1999. After extensive testing, they determined that my stroke had been due to untreated sleep apnea over several years. Seems your blood pressure spikes when you stop breathing so several years of that caused a blood vessel to rupture. So it may be a good thing that you're getting the CPAP. Good luck!

Tell me more about the Pulmonary Hypertension. I'm having my 3rd Echo because they can't seem to get a pressure of the pulmonary artery. What a pain in the neck this is. I was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea, only 7 events in an hour. I still have to try a CPAP. I know there are different kinds so maybe it won't be so bad.
I'm really interested in what they are going to do for you regarding the PH. I thought that was a diagnosis after all other things had been ruled out. Will the WLS help?

Topic: RE: REM sleep caused sleep apnea, common?
I think your in the Phoenix area, I would suggest you see a Pulmonary doctor as soon as you can. THe group I have been going to know all about sleep apnea and REM. Doctor Moeheka and Doctor Conomos are the doctors in Scottsdale I was referred to.
Their #'s are 480-614-2000, get a professional's opinion.

Thanks Terrisa for the responce. I think I'll wait to find out if I get approved for the WLS then.
Topic: RE: Mild Sleep apnea
If you are going to have WLS I would wait to do any type of sleep apnea surgery (tonsils, adenoids, uppp etc)... the drs say that 96 to 99% of sleep apnea patients are resolved after WLS. If you weren;t going for WLS then you might want to look into the other surgeries. I had my adenoids done years before I considered WLS and did not have any improvement. The best surgery for sleep apnea UPPP only has a 50% success rate. CAn't say as for the insurance aspect Ihave no idea. But I would guess that if you have sleep apnea and other comorbidities you should be okay. Best of luck

Topic: RE: DO I NEED WEAR MY CPAP AFTER SURGERY??
I was told not to bring my cpap to the hospital. The first day night after surgery I was on oxygen and everything was fine. The next night I move out of ICU and they said my oxygen looked good. I told them it is as long as I'm awake, and I told them I usually use a cpap on 10. So, that night, every time I dozed off, the monitor started beeping because my oxygen was dropping. I thought I was going to go crazy!! Finally the respiratory person me back on oxygen and they gave me something to help sleep.
The respiratory person told me that when I got home, if the cpap caused my stomach area to expand and it didn't feel comfortable not to use it, but otherwise I was to continue using it.
good luck

Topic: Mild Sleep apnea
I just had a sleep study test and I was told I have a mid case of apnea. I do stop breathing but not enought to make it severar apnea. They can do surgery to fix it or I can get my tonsils out. Dose anyone know if insurance will still cover WLS with a mid case of apnea and a few other commodities? Should I opt out of getting my tonsils removed and go with the other surgery? My tonsils are very large and the Doctor thinks it might help with my slight apnea.

Topic: ~ Setting the pressure & masks ~
Does anyone set the pressure or know how to set the pressure on their machine? Or do you have to have it done by a professional?
I have called my docs forever and cannot get a call back...I know all I need to do is bump it up from 4 to 5 or 6 at the most and I will feel better....I have called home health places and they say I need my docs referral....hard to do when I have called at least 6 times in the last 6 months and never receive a call back...I know I need a new doc...but he is the only one in my insurance group!
Also...Does any one have a (hopefully) cheap recommendations for a good mask?) I have bought 2 masks (the same make of the one I had) and they keep falling to pieces and are expensive! (My insurance does not cover these)
Thanks!
Topic: RE: CPAP...for what???
I can understand your anger. Thought maybe my experience might be of interest to you. I didn't know I had sleep apnea. I didn't feel bad, tired or sick. I went to my doctor to get an order for antibiotics before dental work...since I had been told I have a heart murmur.
My doctor ordered an echocardiogram first. It showed Pulmonary Hypertension. I was so scared. To try to figure out what caused it, they sent me for a sleep study. I figured it would be a waste of time. Imagine my surprise to find out I had severe obstructive sleep apnea. I was shocked.
Needless to say, I got my machine and started using it. I was so fearful of the Pulmonary Hypertension that I took to using it with no problem at all. Now here comes the interesting part. I started waking up feeling so much better than I had before. So much more refreshed. I hadn't known I was feeling "unrefreshed" before the CPAP. I stopped having pesky headaches. I hadn't contributed the headaches to the fact that for much of the night, I was hypoxic, not getting enough oxygen.
While I can appreciate your anger, I would say, give it a chance and see how you feel about it in about 2-3 weeks.
Good luck!
