Topic: RE: REM sleep caused sleep apnea, common?

Your story is the closest thing to what I'v been going through. Did your heart start racing? Did your body pump you up with adrenaline? For several years, my doctor told me I was having "nocturnal panic attacks".  He put me on Paxil and I gained 30lbs!! It never helped. He said "it could take up to 6 months, sometimes a full year before it works. I knew it was something else.  I also thought my doctor thought I was Looney Toones because I became a frequent flier in his office.  I finally suggested sleep apnea. He sent me for the tests and I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea (average of 11 episodes per hour). It's the worst during my REM Sleep. He never discussed my results, he just ordered the cpap for me. I've been on the cpap for a few months and I haven't any any issues. I'm guessing it was causing my oxygen saturation level to get low enough to cause the wild heart palpitations. My doctor thanked me for pushing the envelope. He said he never would have thought of sleep apnea. I had been afraid to sleep because I would fear another attack. I've been told this is still not severe enough to be considered a co-morbidity. (Aetna POS).

Topic: RE: Sleep Apnea Severity

I was wondering the same thing. I only have mild sleep apnea (average 11 episodes per hour). BUT, prior to me getting my bi-pap, the sleep apnea was causing my blood saturation to drop and causing heart palpitations during the night. I thought I was having a heart attack. For several years my doctor thought they were nocturnal panic attacks. I knew it was something else. I finally read about sleep apnea and it's affects. I asked my doctor, had the sleep tests, and I'm finally sleeping peacefully without fear for the first time in about 4 years. With all this, I'm told it wouldn't be considered a co-morbidity. My doctor doesn't think I'll have a problem getting approved, but the bariatric surgeon's office keeps telling me it isn't severe enough. So, I can only try and see what happens. I wish my doctor could put a "spin" on this and lean more towards the heart palpitation issues I was having prior to using the bi-pap. Let me know if you hear anything!
Happy Thanksgiving.

Have you called your doctor to ask him about that? I wouldn't mess around with that, just call and ask to talk to him or his nurse. I don't think it'd have anything to do with the pressure being too high, mine is 18.5 and I havn't had any lung pain.  Sorry I can't be more help!

Hello All,
Im on my fourth week on the cpap and am having pain im my lungs. It started feeling pain 6 days ago after about 5 hours on the machine. The pain is in both my lungs. When I take my equipment off the pain goes away in 5 to 10 minutes.. My doctor recommended a pressure of 16. I set my Apap between 15 and 17. I have changed nothing since the beginning and..... I do not feel sick-any ideas ??? I have to take the full face mask off in the middle of the night just to get back to sleep. HELP

The nose pillows only go into the nose, it is not like a mask that coves the nose/mouth.  it does have head gear but it is great if you wear glasses or read before you fall asleep.
