Thank you so much for the advice...hopefully I won't need the darn thing after surgery!
Topic: RE: sleep apnea and weight loss
What you are describing is similar to how I felt to the first few weeks. I know that it can be very annoying--you aren' alone!
Just keep plugging at it. It will help you feel better (eventually) and also help your hunger hormones get back to normal (apnea messes with them).
Maybe try different masks, or ask for a prescription for sleeping pills to help you get to sleep while you're still getting used to the CPAP.

Hi all, This may become a wee bit long...sorry....3 1/2 years ago, I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. Previous, in Jan. 2002, I had my right lung removed, a carcinoid tumor. I had severe migraines, that were very debilitating although struggling to work 9-5 m-f. So 3 1/2 years ago, I opted to leave my job, and have my sleep study. The end results were not good, thus having the diagonosis of severe sleep apnea. So I started sleeping with my cpap machine and 02 every night....my migraine headaches disappeared!!! I can honestly say, that I was 98% cured!! I was happy!! Then I made the decision for my wls (I had 2 Drs. suggest to me, so over a period of 1 year, I researced, and read, read, read). Finally had my surgery last May 08. I revisited my sleep apnea Dr. this past Nov. and because of the 75lbs lost, thot we could lower my pressure from 10 to 8. I came home from that appt. with my cpap pressure lowered, and slept that night, to wake up Tuesday morning with a most severe headache!! like I had pre-cpap days....I called the office back, and everyone thot my pressure should be upped back up to 10. Thats were its been since then. However, my headaches have returned with a vengence!! At first, I thot that because my humidity reservior wasn't working, (its working fine now--got that problem fixed), I'm sleeping with an extra small full face mask. I think I'm still getting leakage around my mask. Since my lung was removed, I'm a side sleeper!! and since my wls. I've been trying to sleep on my right and left sides. The good news is that my sleep Dr.'
s office is aware, and I think I may have to go back for another sleep study. But these headaches have to go!!! I'm so thankful that I'm not working, I just don't think I could be working and struggling with these headaches!! I hope that I haven't bored anyone, but I just need some answers....Patti K.

What is Chronic Illness?
"A chronic illness is a condition that lasts a year or longer, limits activity, and may require ongoing care. More than 125 million Americans have at least one chronic condition, such as diabetes, cancer, glaucoma, heart disease, Fibromyalga, Multiple Sclerosis, and Lupus. Nearly half as many have more than one chronic condition."
Hello,
This group was specifically created for WLS candidates and post ops who like me face the unique challenges that living with a chronic illness may often present. As individuals with a chronic illness, we face greater challenges that the typical mainstream weight loss surgery patient may not face. Sometimes we feel left out of the loop as we read about others who are doing certain activities that we are no longer able to fully tolerate.
You may find the group by clicking on groups in your index. Once at groups, type in the word Chronic Illness in the search box and the correct group will appear.

Topic: RE: sleep apnea and weight loss
When I first got my CPAP I hated it too and it was hard to sleep through the night while using it. I was tired at first too. It does take a while to get used to it.
I can tell you though, that once I did get used to it, I noticed how much better I felt in the morning, and really through the rest of the day.
Sleep apnea can make weight loss difficult, and it can cause you to gain weight because it messes with some of the hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. So using a CPAP can help with weight loss. Also, apnea isn't healthy so using a mask is important for health.

I had the pillow mask that went just under my nostrils. It was much better than the huge mask. However, After surgery I was lucky enough after losing 180 lbs I dont have to have it anymore.
I would just suggest u try different masks out.

I DID Make It - 135.4 8-1-10! Now working on post baby weight loss. (All WL post-op - preop got up to 220 from quitting smoking & last supper syndrome.) 5'2"
I'm 40-60x per hour and I wake up over 100x per night - this is of course a short night (around 6 hrs) by the time I fell asleep plus being woken up for this or that.
I never opted for the CPAP (young and single and vain when I was diagnosed) but for most people it really helps. OSA is actually my main reason for having surgery, I'm tired of always being tired!

I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea. I can't believe I stopped breathing 201 times! How am I still alive after going undiagnosed? I am waiting for my machine and can't wait until it arrives. The nasal pillows are great! It will be nice to rediscover sleep.

Do you have a humidifier? I found that the air irritated my nose and made it stuffy. When I added heated humidity it was sooooo much better.
