Topic: Sleep Apnea took my brothers life June 6, 2008.

This is very difficult for me to talk about. I miss my brother (my best friend). It was the morning before my daughter's gaduation party. My brother was going to come over that day and we were going to grill chicken on the grill for my daughter's party. He lived at my parents home. I called over to their house to ask a question. They said Jeff wasn't up yet. They would always use a broom handel and tap the ceiling to wake him up. They tried it 3 times and he never responded. My Dad went upstairs to his room and Jeff was dead. I was on the phone when my Dad came down to tell my Mom to call 911. I got off of the phone and was on my way over to their house crying and in disbelief!! By the time the paramedics got there, they figured he had been gone about 5 hours. He had stayed overnight at our home a few times and stayed in the extra bed in my son's room. My son realized that Jeff had stopped breathing during the night and had told him about it. Jeff had plans to have it checked out. He was also going through the process to have bariatric surgery to lose weight. He didn't make it to the bariatric surgery. Sleep Apnea is VERY SERIOUS!! Years before this happened to my brother, my husband was diagnosed and has been on a c-pap machine ever since. I thank God that he was diagnosed and treated in time!! I have heard that sleep apnea can run in familes. My Mom has it. My brother died from it. I went to get checked. I have it also. I was shocked!! I went through about 5 masks before I found one that I could be comfortable enough sleeping with. If you struggle with your mask and the comfort of it, don't give up!! Remember that not wearing a mask could mean losing your life. All it takes is to stop breathing and not starting back up 1 time and you perish from this earth. Please help bring awareness to those you love.

Thanks Jamie.  I am about 99% sure that surgery is not going to "cure" my apnea.  I think I have had it since I was around 20 years old.  I was only 130 pounds then, but I have been verrrryyyyy tired since then and I have gained 70 pounds.  So I think it is something I will have to deal with for quite a while....

Your insurance should cover the costs but I did not have insurance when I was first diagnosed.  Since it is a life threatening issue they normally will sell the equipment at a reduced rate (mine was 10% over cos) and I made payments.

I would not bank/bet on wl surgery fixing your sleep apnea.  Three people in my family have sleep apnea and two of them are not obese, one is a normal weight.  You can rent the machine but in the long run I would talk to your surgeon and ask if the surgery will get rid of the problem.

Good luck and feel free to ask me if you have any questions,

-Jaime

I thought that the deodorant might break my face out but it never does. I am going to the my primary doc so that he can refer me for another sleep study to see if I still need it or maybe just have the titration reduced. I am hoping to get off of the thing for good. I can't wait to snuggle down into my pillow again.

I thought that it never happened to me before surgery either. My husband told me that it did. I only noticed it after surgery though. My cpap tech told me that it could be that before I taking in more liquids and may not have gotten as dry as I do now. I do know that I am not getting as much water as I am supposed to. I did get more before surgery but this still seems like a weird answer.

I have an appt to go back and have another sleep study done. They say that after losing 30 lbs you might need to be re-titrated. I imagine that after losing 100 lbs you might not need it or if you do, at a much slower less powerful rate. I know that I was told that if I was not compliant, (using my cpap machine as ordered) I would be responsible for paying the insurance company back for it. The only way I can get away with not using it is when and if the testing shows that I no longer need it. I can't imagine that they could make me pay them the money but I am not going to risk it right now.

I've had mine for a little over 2 weeks now and I do that every night, too.  I'm aware that I'm doing it, but every night at 3am (it's always that time), I just can't wear it anymore...I'm itching to get it off.  The other night I woke up and took it off and thought that I had left it on most of the night ( I though it was about 6am), but I must have been dreaming because I did a double take at the alarm clock and guess what time it was?  3am.  lol  I'm starting to feel more comfortable with it on in the last week, so I'm hoping over the next few weeks that it doesn't bother me anymore and can hopefully keep it on for a whole night.  I've been told it can take 4-6 weeks to get used to it completely.

Yes. I wake up in the morning with the mask on my night stand machine turned off and never remember doing it. I thought I was crazy, but my Dr said it is very common for people to do it. He has been sleeping with his for over 20 years and still does it.

I find myself pulling my CPAP off at night after about 2 -3 hours.  Has anyone experienced this also or any suggestions?

I use a eye glass cleaning clothe, works well and afte two or three days i throw in the washer.  This seems to work well without leaving a film or fragments behind.
