After my sleep study, they told me I had a very severe case and needed treatment, then gave me the two weeks business. I called my doctor's office and complained. They were trying to give me the run around and I told them that if something happened to me because they were delaying the results for two weeks, I would sue. I had the full report in my hands the next day along with an apology! Try bugging your doctor, it is your health we are talking about!

I have the same problem especially with the band-aids. I found that if I put on Burt's B Res-Q-Remedy, it prevents me from getting the ra**** is not pretroleum based so it will not damage your mask.

I use NeilMD sinus rinse nightly to clear my nose and sinuses. I have chronic allergies and this rinse has helped tremendously. After years of having recurrent sinus infections, I have been infection and cold free for over a year since I've started using it. It takes a while to get used to doing it and you must do it at least an hour before bedtime. It only costs about $10 at Walmart. I heat the water for 23 seconds in the microwave add the solution package and rinse. The whole thing takes about 2 minutes.

When you first get the machine, you swallow a lot of air until your body gets used to it. This will pass in about a month or so. Stick with it, it will be worth it. Sea

Hi Marci-I was having a similar problem. I have severe apnea too, my pressure is 20\16. I tried a bunch of masks but the Respironics Comfort Gel Nasal Mask worked the best for me. Because the doctor and resp therapist were so slow I ordered it from cpap.com. It is a god send! I even wear it for a quick nap. My respiratory therapist gave me the directions below for fitting it and they seemed to work. I hope it works for you and you feel as good as I do now.

1. Start with all the straps loosened.
2. Looking in the mirror, tighten the straps around your forehead evenly so they are snug.
3. Attach the lower straps, making sure they are even on both sides until they are a little loose.
4. Turn on your machine and lay flat on your back. If there are leaks, tighten both lower straps evenly and just enough to stop the leak(s).
5. Once you have stopped all the leaks, roll on your side. If there are still leaks, again tighten the lower straps evenly just until the leaks stop.

The key to to this for me was adjusting the straps the same on both sides. Keep a pocket mirror near your bed so you can check this. Also don't overtighten the straps. Initially, I had leaks and was tightening the mask so much it became painful and I would just take it off.  Give yourself at least a month to adjust. Remember, even if you are wearing just an hour a night, you are still cutting down all those risk factors that sleep apnea causes. Stick with it and don't be afraid to try different masks. Many of the websites, will sell you insurance for a few dollars so you can return the mask if it doesn't work out. It is worth it. It took me three tries to get the right mask. Good luck, I hope this helps. Sea

Topic: Bi-Pap Machine

I am super frustrated - not actually with the machine itself but with the mask.  I have a really high pressure setting 22/18 b/c I have severe sleep apnea.

I can fall asleep with the mask on and stay asleep until the mask starts leaking air.  Usually in about 1.5-2 hours after going to sleep.  And no matter how I adjust the mask - tighter, looser, take it off and off and put it back back on, ramp the pressure down, change positions in bed - I can't get the air to stop leaking!!  So I get pissed and take it off.  The next time I wake up in the night I will put it back on and try again - only to follow the exact same patter.  So over the course of the night of 7-8 hours of attempted sleep I will have the mask on for no more than 4-5 hours - NOT for lack of trying.  Granted this is new to me - I have had it about 2 weeks, but haven't been able to increase the mask time.

So I called the people that supplied the mask and machine to me to see about getting a different mask.  Their solution is to call the doc and ask if they can temporarily decrease the pressure so that the mask stops leaking and then gradually increase the pressure to where it needs to be.  Well THAT isn't the problem - that I can't tolerate the pressure!  The mask is the issue.  That was on Monday morning, and the still haven't gotten back to me!  SO I have a call into my doc asking if she (her nurse) will call and talk to them about a new mask.  Plus I don't think she is going to agree to lower the pressure b/c she was really pushing for the sleep study and then the machine!!

Did any of you have a lot of issues with your masks and how did you resolve them?

Thanks for all your help!

Yes it is Provigil. It has been a wonder drug for me.  I am not dragging around all day. I am nearly out of the samples now and my insurance does not want to cover it. I hope it gets taken care of. I don't know how much it would be to just buy it every month.
Glad you have a surgery date. It is so hard waiting.

Topic: RE: Is my Sleep Apnea Gone??!
I have had a total of 10 sleep studies, yep since 1997 when I was first diagnosed with sleep apnea, a good 8 years before I had gastric bypass surgery and when a sleep study was required to see if one had sleep apnea. I already knew I did. Even with losing 90 pounds with the gastric bypass, my calibration went from a 20, which is high, to a 10. I am now back up to 16.5 since gaining 50 pounds back, but I may put it even higher than that. That is why I am now going to have a revision to a DS to hopefully get rid of the apnea once and for all, and, of course, to get rid of diabetes (another forum).

Topic: RE: Sleep Apnea took my brothers life June 6, 2008.
Wow Patty, I am so sorry your brother had to die so that others may live once finding out about sleep apnea. I had been diagnosed with sleep apnea in 1997 and started wearing a C-PAP mask that year after had surgery for the snoring and apnea (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) yeah, one long word. Though I am still alive, thankfully, I have always hated my mask. I wear it every night consistently, but have been known to wake up and rip it off my face. My BF says when I take it off, my snoring is terrible so I do use it more for his sake, though I had been wearing it for many years before BF moved it.  After not getting rid of my sleep apnea after gastric bypass, I am now on the way to have a duodenal switch surgery and hopefully with the weight loss from that, I will be able to get off this C-PAP mask. Keep telling your story. In fact, post it on a lot of the forums because on some of the forums I have been to, many talk about not using their mask for whatever reason and though we are told that one can die from apnea not beeing treated appropriately, no one can understand the depth of this medical condition and you are one person to share what it can do to a family.
