Topic: RE: Bi-Pap Machine
Hi, I am new to this particular forum, because someone just referred me to it today.  I have had my CPAP machine for around two months, and still cannot get a good night's sleep.  At first, I had the large nasal mask over my nose, and I had problems with leakage, until I got the straps tight enough.  Then I had another unforeseen problem - the top of the mask was scarring the bridge of my nose, and even though I put a small bandaid on every night, my nose just kept getting redder and more swollen.  I told the salesman this, and he sent me a nostril insertion mask called a nasal pillows mask.  I've had it since this past Thursday, and I struggle each night with leakage from it, since it seems to slip off of my nasal passages just enough to leak and wake me up every hour, looking at the clock.  This morning, I felt so discouraged, angry, & depressed.  I cannot go back to the sleep apnea, which is waking up every thirty seconds after stopping breathing for ten seconds.  I just was diagnosed with it about three months ago, after a sleep study.

I've left a message for the Praxair salesman again, who told me to try adjusting some prongs or something on either side of the mask to fit against my face.  I tried, but was again experiencing leakage last night.  I've noticed that there are other kinds of masks I've never heard of mentioned on this post and forum.  I need to ask my salesman if there are any other variations available from Praxair.  I've asked him if there is a smaller lighter version of the mask, and if he knows of any pads to protect my nose from further damage.

Glad to be aboard!

Topic: Hi everyone - just got diagnosed
Quick intro:

I generally lurk around the IL state boards but I can now call this section part of my routine. I am really new to all of this and I am trying my best to play catchup with all of the various post in here. The tech stated that they were able to restore my H20 levels to a normal range at 7cm and that I would need to get fitted for a cpap mask and obtain a  machine. The store they referred me to is now dealing with my insurance and I am just waiting for the callback from them for my appointment. I had some ???? that I was hoping I could get some answers on.

1. I am a side sleeper (have been for a while), will they only fit me for a full mask? if so, do any side sleepers find it difficult to sleep with that type of mask?

2. Is the purpose of the machine to allow me sleep more comfrotably on my back or just in general? (I know that sounds like a silly ? but they place so much emphasis in the test on sleeping on my back that I felt bad when they finaly allowed me to try and sleep on my side.)

Thanks in advance for your advice.
Omar

Hi!
It sounds interesting.  How do the products taste?  I'm still getting things together.  My surgeon and I are trying for an August surgery date.

About 5 or 6 years ago I had a sleep study and they told me I needed a CPAP.  I used it religiously, even if I were just laying down for a nap.

Last February I had a second study and was informed I needed a BI-PAP.  Not a problem, at least I had insurance this time around to cover the cost of the machine this time (I had to pay cash for the CPAP).  Everything has been smooth with the BI-PAP as well,... Until...  I had my Duodenal Switch October 13th.  At the time I weighed 570 lbs, I now weigh 365 lbs (a 205 lb loss).  No congrats needed, if I was doing a great job I wouldn't have needed the surgery.

Anyway, to get to the point finally, since about Christmas I have started loosing sleep a little at a time.  I averaged 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 hours of sleep, according to the 30 day average on my machine.  Last week I checked and I am down to 4:12 min. to 5 hours a night.  I too am having issues with a leaking mask but not for a while after I fall asleep.  I fight with the damn thing on and off all night long.  I WILL continue wearing it because with sleep apnea, you can simply not wake up.  I said WITH SLEEP APNEA YOU CAN SIMPLY NOT WAKE UP!  Please remember that when you get irritated in the middle of the night and take it off to go back to sleep.

I called and got an appointment with the sleep center at St. Francis in Peoria (where I always go) and I saw them Friday April 4th.  I took the card and they said my mask was leaking about 43 minutes a night.  That sounds about right, if it leaks 5 minutes every 30 minutes that would mess with anyone.  they suggested I get a new mask and said due to my weight loss I needed to get retested, I go in April 22nd.  My insurance will cover another mask April 20th so I guess I will just put up with it until then.

I cannot say it enough everyone, please do not discard your sleep apnea, see your Dr. and make them set you up with a Sleep specialist so you can be evaluated.  Also, if you need a mask get one, I think with the amount my face has shrunk my mask is too large for my face now.

Good luck to everyone and I hope you all start getting some much deserved sleep  ,
-Jaime

Topic: RE: ...and then she said" Renee, you stop breathing 30 times an hour"
Oh my gosh.  I was so miserable before getting my CPAP.  In the 2-3 years prior to being diagnosed I could not stay awake at all!  I was in grad school at the time and it's one of my biggest regrets.  By the time I had my sleep study, I had already had one minor car accident.  I had nearly killed myself driving numerous other times.  I was young and I chalk all that up to stubborn stupidity.

I stopped breathing 132 times per hour at my first sleep study.  I had oxygen sats at around 76% and I only had about 5 minutes of REM sleep the whole night.  No wonder I couldn't stay awake anywhere!  I know I am blessed to be alive today.

I hope one day to be rid of the CPAP, but I kind of have my doubts about that.  Once I was diagnosed, my mom and I were talking and the whole picture really became clear.  I probably had it even as a child.  In the meantime, I'd rather look like a scuba diver in bed than be the walking dead.

I was told the same thing 5 years ago when I had my first sleep study.  Apparently I only spent about 5 minutes in REM the whole night. I had an average of 132 events an hour, which the sleep tech said he had never seen! My oxygen saturation was at 76%. He said anything below 80% is heart failure level and that the only reason mine wasn't in the 50s is because of my age (I'm 26). He actually said to me "the only reason you aren't DEAD right now is because you're young."

I have had one sleep study post-op and they reduced my pressure.  I think I'm due for another one because I'm getting bad dry mouth every morning and I'm waking up a lot.

I noticed pretty shortly after my RNY that I was waking up in the morning with extreme dry mouth.  I did not have this problem before surgery.  I've yet to determine if it was my new mask or the weight loss (both happened in the same time period).  At 3 months post-op, I had a new sleep study.  They dropped my pressure just slightly, but I am still on the machine.

I have lost about 60-70 pounds more since then and I'm thinking I'm due for another sleep study.  I have dry mouth BAD every morning.  Plus, the thing has started blowing in my eardrums again.  Bleh.  I want rid of that machine so bad...
