pressure number

Hi, I've seen others post about their "number" for their machine. It seems like most people are in the mid-to-upper teens. I'm just wondering about that, because the people who did my sleep test told me I had severe apnea (70 episodes per hour), but my number is only 7. That sounds weird, if I have such severe apnea. What do you all think? Sarah

Sarah, I know what you mean about the number. Here is what I have been told the setting, in your case 7, is the amount of pressure it takes to open your airway back up. From what I understand, it has nothing to do with the episodes per hour. My setting is 18, where my Dad is only set at 5 and we were both told we have severe apnea. Not sure if this helps. Connie

My number is also 11, but I was told it was severe. I was also given a "bottom" number, which is 4. I am not sure what the bottom number means, except that my machine will ramp up from 4 to 11 over 20 minutes. Cheryl

My number is 8 and I also have severe apnea. My brother, who is not overweight, has much stronger pressure than I do - at least in the high teens. Hope this helps!

Hi Susan, I had to take my own CPaP to the hospital with me when I had surgery. Rebecca

4 is the lowest setting they start at, Then it ramps to your prescribed setting. My setting is 9cm which is the volume of air it takes to open your airways and supply enough oxygen to your heart so that your heart is not overworked pumping blood trying to supply oxygen to the brain and you can get a goodnights rest and once this is achieve you reach REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and you should reach REM sleep at least 4 times a night.

Hi Sarah, I woke up 60 times a minute during my sleep study. My machine setting is only at an 8. I could not even imagine adjusting to a setting in the teen's. I had a hard enough time with mine. It did make a difference when I went to a full face mask from the nasal one though.

I have extremely severe apnea, just diagnoised thursday at 155 per hour and my machine starts at 5 and tops out at 20. Last night was my first full night sleeping with it and woke up to it saying 19.5. But I think something is wrong with my mask...air was just blowing out in like 3 spots on the tubing.
