A few Questions
Greetings Everyone
I had a few questions about apnea since I have been recently diagnosed (last night). I went for a test last weekend and they told me that I needed to come back so I went again last night and the tech told me that I stopped breathing the previous week 42 times an hour. Is that a really high number or does it just seem so to me?
I slept with the CPAP machine and I do feel more alert today, but my nose got really stuffy during the night and I had to get "unhooked" to go blow it. Is this typical? I don't have a cold or anything.
Also, after WLS, do most people get off of the CPAP, or is it going to be a friend for life? Just wondering.
Have a wonderful day!
Leslie
Hi Leslie,
I too am newly diagnosed with OSA. I was told I stopped breathing an average of 47 times an hour and was prescribed a pressure of 18. I've had my CPAP machine less than a week now. I am doing OK although I'd be lying if I said I was completely comfortable with it. I do leave it on all night and do believe I feel better. I am waiting insurance approval for WLS and am also hopeful that losing weight will eliminate my need for CPAP eventually. I also experience some "stuffiness". The repiratory therapist told me to be sure and use my heated humidifier and instructed me to increase the heat as needed. I still experience a little stuffiness in the am but it is quickly resolved within 30 minutes to 1 hour after waking. Good luck to you Leslie. It was nice to hear from another new person! Thanks. Diane
Hi! I, too, have just recently been diagnosed with having severe sleep apnea (66 breathing episodes/hour). I've been through the initial sleep test and then a 2nd test whi*****luded being hooked up with the CPAP all night. I have to tell you - I wasn't looking forward to the CPAP, but I had such a good night's sleep, I actually can't wait to get my own. I didn't experience any stuffiness, but my doctor did say that when I get my own machine to make sure I use the heater - he said it doesn't blow warm or hot air, it just humidifies the air so it's easier to breathe. He also said that more than likely once I lose the weight, I'll be able discontinue the CPAP - I just got my surgery date - May 23!! A little under a month until I'm on the losing side!!
Good luck, everyone, with your CPAP machines!!

Hi Ladies!
Thanks for your replies. These message boards are so great since everyone knows exactly what you are going through. I love reading profiles too.
I wish all of you the very best! I am still going through pre-op testing so I don't have a date yet. I am praying that everything works out and I am approved!
Have a wonderful night!
Leslie
