What does an RI of 9 mean? 1 x Apnea and 24 x Hypopneas?

Had a sleep test last week, just the pulse oximetry with nasal canula.

Got my results today and am waiting for the Doctor to call back and explain it's significance.
Just looking for a little clarification while I am waiting.

I had a 5 and a half hour test. I had 1 Apnea {does that mean 1 episode of stopping breathing) and 24 Hypopneas - which the medical dictionary says is very shallow breathing.  My "RI" box says it should be less than 5 but mine is a 9.  The page says 9=Suspected Pathological Breathing Disorder.

Can anyone shed some light on this. I am submitting my paperwork for RNY tomorrow and just wonder if I will end up getting put forward for a sleep study, or if I don't have surgery if it sounds like I would go on a CPAP machine, or if it is mild?

Thanks for any help.

Hello Kaz,

Your questions are beyond my expertise. I would suggest asking your pulmonologist these questions.
