can this be possible? - no more CPAP - after 15 years?!

Check this out.  I had DS wls in March of this year.  I've lost almost 150 lbs compared to  a year ago.  My CPAP is old(6+ years) and air & machine noises from it were starting to bother my family at night even though it was never a problem in the past.  So I figured pressure change (reduction) was probably needed.

Not sure yet - but had sleep study done last night (results take up to 2 weeks).  It was supposed to be a split study where they let you try without a machine for a couple of hours and then put you on a CPAP or BIPAP machine for the 2nd half of the night if you need it.

I awoke briefly twice but they never came in to put me on the machine!

It was my 1st night successfully spent without a CPAP in last 15 years.  I was diagnosed & issued my first CPAP in April 1994.  Techie had an opinion on how things went last night, but advised he was not allowed to give advice and that I "should not make any changes without discussing with doctor".

I really thought I would be getting a pressure reduction, but did not think for a second that CPAP might be going away for good.  It sounds pretty likely that I'll be separating from CPAP permanently.  Wish me luck as I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm only 5 months out of surgery and I've lost 112 lbs.  I'm afraid to sleep without my CPAP.  I don't know, call me crazy, but I LIKE my CPAP.  Its almost a security blanket for me.

I know what you mean!

I'm still just a bit nervous when I lie down to sleep with no machine.

I am hoping to find the resolution of my sleep apnea. I know it's from the soft tissue (fat) collapsing when I relax to sleep. Doesn't matter which way I sleep. My Pulmonologist said it  may take up to 3 years - but I am hopeful.

Good luck and I will say a prayer for you. I can't wait to see if I will be able to get rid of my bi-pap one day. I had the lapband 4 weeks ago and I have lost 21 pounds since the banding, kinda slow to me but I'm sure it will pick up. I was diagnosed with apnea 5 years ago and I hope that one day I too can get off of the machine. God Bless!

Congrats!  I haven't had a sleep study but I'm pretty confident I don't need my machine any more.  I was afraid to sleep without it but once I did without the sleep apnea whistle or whatever, I did fine.  I still use it most of the time but in another 20 pounds I'm going to let it go.

I agree with Joseph and Bill. I have been lovers with my cpap for over 15 years, and just the thoughts of going to sleep with out her is mind boggling. I have even purchased a second baby in case my first love kicks the bucket.

Last week I did something I very seldom do, I fell asleep in my recliner. I was happy to wake with a dry mouth, telling me my sweetie pie was still needed.

My PCP said he would have to give me another sleep study before he could reduce my cpap pressure, but I guess he has never heard of the Internet. You can find out anything. I turned mine down from 11 to 8 1/2.  I now no longer have problems with my mask leaking, and I feel OK.

Life is getting better.....John

Sorry. I don't have a link. I had purchased a second c-pap from the internet at c-pap.com, and I got the owners manual with it that told me how to ajust the pressure. My original c-pap is still set at the high pressure.
