Hello I just Found Out
There is nothing to be scared of. If you got throught the first sleep study without any trouble, the second will be no different. You will just have a somewhat uncomfortable mask over your nose. If you're like me, you will sleep better than ever before.
I'm just confused about the timing. You will probably be more uncomfortable from the surgery than the CPAP.

I did notice an earlier post re someone giving away a CPAP machine on this board. Your doctor may have one since a lot of people give them back when they don't need them anymore. They do need to be programed by a doctor to meet your body's requirements.
I have a love-hate relationship with mine. Getting the perfect fitting mask is the most important thing to accomplish. I went through five masks in the first three months trying to find the right one. I finally went with a gel mask. There's nothing to be afraid of. You might need some type of mild sleeping pill until you get use to the mask. But the difference you will feel after a decent night's sleep is amazing.
Your body needs the deep sleep in order to flush out your liver and kidneys. When you have apena you're waking up all the time (I was waking up an average of 46 times a hour. I would stop breathing and my brain would wake me up enough to breath again). You don't realize that your being woke up all the time. You will never want to go back to being sleep-deprived, waking up with a headache, afternoon exhaustion, no energy and it does lead to weight gain if it's not diagnosed.
I hope this calms your fears. Dianne

Hi Twinkletoes, I also just recently found out that I have sleep apnea. I had my second sleep study with the cpap machine a week ago and have my new machine. I was scared out of my wits to use this machines,,,,, but within a couple of days it has become my new sleep buddy and I am having no problems with it.
My surgeon told me that I had to be on the machine prior to surgery so that I would be able to use it after surger to aid in the healing process.

Hi All,
This is my first post. I just found out the results of my sleep study today and am diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and moderate oxygen desaturation. My doctor also said that I need to have the cpap before surgery to help with healing after the surgery. I cannot wait to go to my next sleep study to get my cpap because I finally realize why I have been so tired for so long. However, I am not excited to wear the lovely mask that will be the butt of all jokes from my goofy almost 13 year old boys. It is nice to know others are dealing with the same issues.

My sleep apnea is pretty severe. I have obstruction 47 times per hour. I have had my machine for three nights, and co-workers said I looked well rested. I felt pretty good as well. Now I'm just trying to find the right mask.
My doc will cancel my surgery if I check into hospital without my machine. It is a hassel, but I just keep in mind that I'm getting a good deep and healing sleep, with appropriate levels of oxygen at night.
You will feel a bit like Darth Vader, but it's worth it. Usually weight loss reduces or eliminates sleep apnea.
Good luck to you!

Every morning in Africa , a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning inAfrica , a lion wakes up.
It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Getting used to the cpap will b hard, and i have to agree the mask is very important in getting used to it.

Doesn't your insurance cover a machine? I wa told that the actual pressure that the technician sets on the CPap is a prescription, so you can't just go and use someone elses, it has to be set up for you personally, I have severe sleep apnea so my pressure it set really high, w/ you having moderate sleep apnea my machine wouldn't work for you. Good Luck!!! Linda
