I've just completed my preoperative work up and waiting for the doctor's office to submit the paperwork to the insurance company.  In addition, just received my CPAP machine on Tuesday.  Have been too hummilated to use it yet.  My question is if anyone knows whether using it is required to get insurance approval?

I doubt compliance with CPAP therapy  is required,  but just the fact that you have been diagnosed with a comorbidity should increase the likelyhood that the they will approve the request for bariatric surgery.

I don't let the look and feel of the mask keep me from using mine. You must not be in the same boat I am in terms of need because it was affecting my life every day. You're lucky to be able choose not to use it.

See if your PCP will give you a sleeping pill to help you get used to the machine.  I have been using my machine now for a week and felt the same way you did.

I have to call in a reading from the machine to the sleep clinic and they submit this reading to my insurance co. (BCBS) to get payment for the machine.

My surgeon requires you to use the cpap machine if diagnosed or he will not do the surgery.

Our sleep clinic Doc told me that it is best to have a few weeks of treatment with CPAP or same type of machine (I use an APAP) BEFORE surgery. He is of the belief that it would be beneficial for my throat to have some practice staying open and my pulse ox levels consistent while sleeping before undergoing anesthia.  I am required to have my machine with me the day of surgery to use afterwards. If  I don't have it when I check into the hospital, then surgery is cancelled.

I'm experimenting with different masks now. They do look horrible, and are not very comfortable, but my DH and I make it fun.

Best of luck...
Kathy
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.

It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.
