I have sleep apnea, but it is mild. I also have a CPAP machine. I am required to wear it every night. Has anyone gotten approved through BCBS of Al, with mild sleep apnea?

I'm wondering the same thing...does insurance deliniate between the two? I'm hoping sleep apnea that requires cpap is good enough to qualify as a major co-morbidity...if I was talking to anyone other than a fellow wls candidate ...they'd think I was crazy! Jen

I had United health Care. My only co-morbidity was sleep apnea. I admit I did the surgery as a preventative measure to lengthen my expected lifespan. Every insurance provider is different, and even the same provider will vary from one employer to another as each insurance company offers hundreds of different coverage options. If you require a machine, I would think that would automatically work in your favor for approval for wls.

Hi Emma, Have you called your insurance company yourself? Most health insurances cover this under Durable Medical Equipment usually at 100% vs. 80% for other medical equipment. All you need is a copy of your sleep study and a RX from your doctor and you can visit the medical equipment supply store yourself. Most times they will bring the equipment to you so they can fit you for your headgear. Please check into this as untreated sleep apnea even mild can cause health problems such as heart problems, weight gain, etc. Valerie

what is considered mild? My machine is a bipap and the pressure varies for 5-15. I am planning on using this as a comortality to try and get approved with healthnet.
