Surgery or not? That is the question!
Here is the whole story!!!
I purchased a total gym and purchased the new WII EA fit game. I have been placed on diet pills from my DR because the scale was not moving and I was not close to my per surgery goal weight to be approved from my insurance. Now this month I feel wonderful. I have lost a total of 9 pounds this month with diet and exercise. At this point I'm wondering if surgery would be the best thing for me or can I do it on my own. Then I think about YO - YO dieting and I get scared. This this feeling normal? Should I get the surgery? When I started in December I was 258 and now I'm 244. I think if I lose anymore I might not even get approved for the surgery. Any advice would be great!
I think most of us that have had any form of weight loss surgery have been on the diet roller coater, down today, up tomorrow, just like a yo-yo. You're right, it should scare you. It does tax your body, especially your heart. But you know what? A life of morbid obesity is scarier.
I don't think that insurance will deny because you loose 'too much'. The main reason for the requirement of loosing weight prior to surgery is so that when you are on the table you are in the best possible condition you can be in. Your surgeon want you to be as healthy as possible when he/she operates. Watching how you eat and exercising now will also get you ready for the life altering change that surgery is.
Please understand that RNY, lap band, etc are tools only. You will need to be very mindful of what you eat. Exercise still needs to happen along with the mindful eating in order for you to be successful. Mostly what the surgery does for you is help to keep the portions under control. Each procedure has it's pros and cons, but they all come down to being a tool. And you will need to learn how to use that tool to your best advantage.
I hope this was helpful. I only had my gastric bypass eight weeks ago, but if there is anything I can do to help or answer question, feel free to send me a PM.
Have a great day! Deb

OMGS Renee! I read this and thought the same dam thing! When I had to fill out the papers for my insurance and I got to the diet history, I had a 12 year diet "resume". lol The sad thing is I'm only 24! I started dieting since I was in the eighth grade! It was time for me to make one of the most serious commitments you can to yourself. I feel I made the right choice.
To the OP, you have to feel it in yourself. I had the idea of RNY for three years. ( I didn't know about the DS until these boards lol.) I wanted it, but I had all these "thoughts" in my head. Things like: What if I don't lose weight, What are others going to think of me, etc. It really all comes down to you and what is best for you. My final straw was having chest pain. At 24 years old. WTH? That was my breaking point. I felt truly that without this surgery I wouldn't live a long and productive life. I wouldn't be able to do the things I wanted and accomplish my goals. And it is the right choice for me. The weight isn't coming off as fast as I hoped, but my daily headaches are gone. The chest pain is gone. For me, this is a god-send within itself. But I had reached the point that I actually feared for my life. My grandmother had heart problems and I didn't want to be taken to soon like she was.
This is just why I choose surgery. If you can lose it and keep it off without it, do it! That may be the best way. But like Renee, I had lost a significant amount of weight on my own, only to put it on years later. Gaining it back was worse then gaining it period. Hope this helps!
