thanks for your reponse, I don't have any co-morbities except a few stiff joints some time. I have decided to go ahead with the lessons on Aug. 6&7 I 'm not sure which to be more nervous about diving or surgery, one fear at a time right, so in one week i'll be blowing bubbles and one month after that i'll be on the lossing side.

Hey Ileana, Thanks for the reply, I know that a little while back there was some talk about trying to get a trip together for somewhere off the coast of Texas, sure hope it is still in the works. Keep me up on any developments that happen. Earl

Hi Pat, welcome to the board. The excess weight itselfe is usualy not a problem, the co-morbities on the other hand still raise some questioins, I guess not much research has been done on the effects of diving on peaple with diabetes, high blood pressure and so on. If no co-morbities, jump in and have a great time, if there are, the dive shop and instructers usualy ask you to get your Dr.'s okee dokee before continuieng. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi Pat, I learned to dive years ago, when I was well into my upper 200's. From what you read, carrying the extra weight can pose some risks. I never did enriched dived (mixed gases) or stayed below for extended times (especially because my ex sucked his tank dry in half the time), so I never experience any problems diving heavy. I haven't been diving since my surgery last July, however. So I say go for it! Take te lessons, get comfortable under the water and enjoy a place where it is easier to move.... no matter what size you are (that is one thing I loved about diving). Ileana

Hi there Earl, Just thought I would drop a note and tell you that it may be quiet around here, but not dead. I am hoping that the scuba board can start to plan a trip sometime in the next year. ! Ileana

Hi All, Just found this board seems they have one for everything. I'm not a diver yet my plan is to take lessons after my surgery but my husband and sister are after me to do it now.I guess my queston is are there any special problems in learning to dive while i am so heavy. They tell me it would be a good distraction while i wait on my surgery date ( Sep. 7)

Hi to all, I've been stopping in about every other day to see what everyone has been up to, but it's been realy quite here. I sure hope it's because everyone is busy diving! I would still like to here from everyone about some, or all of their dives, what they liked and didnt, what to pass on and what not to miss for anything. As I'm typing now Emily is threatening in a very bad way, Cozumel, and the rest of the Yucatan. My prayers are with everyone there. My wife has a co-worker who is there right now working on some property that he and his wife bought, they are about 50 miles to the east of merida. sorry for rambling, just trying to make a little noise. This is usualy where my mom would send me to my room for being a nuisance.

Belize is just fine. No one is pulling knives and the locals are very friendly. Sure, like anywhere there are some not so great spots but you just avoid those. Who knows what went on with that divemaster. Anyhoo...the diving here is great, and most everyone is super friendly. Come on down and check it out for yourself. Later

Hi Ileana and Sharon, and whoever else is dropping in, I've wondered if Belize would be good, and while on vacation I asked our divemaster about several places. His highest recamendation was Cuba,"with a huge grin on his face", he was not so glowing about Belize however, maybe some regional rivalry or something, his comments were, peaple there not friendly at all, is o.k. if you dont mind sitting in a corner to gaurd your back, or constantly looking over your shoulder to see if the locals are pulling out the knives. Maybe he has had a terrible experiance that realy tramatized him and left some scars, I dont know. But from the sounds of your posts this might not be the case, so please let me know if it's ok to let my gaurd down and relax in Belize. How many differant places have you ladies been diving, and were would you recomend and why? You you probably didnt think this would turn into a game of twenty gazillion questions did you? Its nice hearing from everybody, and no I"m not lonely, I'm just a bit social. Later gator
