Topic: Dive trip scheduled in Jan
I have not been diving in the 2 years since my surgery due to family responsibilites, but I have a trip scheduled in January to the FL keys. I am so excited...
BUT...
I just realized I have an incisional hernia. It does not hurt, but the bulge is about 2". The problem is that my WLS doctor, who I would want to have do the surgery, falls off my insurance Jan 1. So, I am trying to schedule it for the week after Thanksgiving. (I'll find out Tuesday). That will give me 6 weeks to heal before the dive trip. If I put my gear off and on in the water, do any of you divers think I can manage it without tearing up the repair?
(I am 53 years old, down to 145 lbs, and in otherwise excellent health.) I heal well and will definitely work out as much as the doc will permit after the surgery.
Just wondered if anyone here had been through this...

Topic: RE: Lap-Band and Diving Question
I have the lap-band and have had it since 4/2004. I have not been diving since being banded but, I know a few people who have and have had no problems. Also, my doctor is a diver as well and I asked him (after the fact) and he stated that there should be no problems. Again, if you are like me anything is possible.
Good luck and if you have any other questions please ask. I love my band and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Topic: Lap-Band and Diving Question
Hi all! I'm looking into having the lap-band procedure done but one of my largest questions is about diving post-op. I'm not entirely familiar with all the different surgical acronyms/procedures but this is the one where the stomach is wrapped in a band that can be adjusted with saline solution after surgery. I was at a seminar and asked the doctor about diving with the band full. He said it would be necessary to remove the saline before and replace after diving deeper than 30ft. Fills cost from $100-$250 so this would become rather expensive, especially for weekend trips and such.
My question is, does anyone here have the band that I'm talking about and if so, what are your experiences with diving with it in regards to depth, fills, pressure, etc. I found this statement on doc-scuba.com "The adjustable band is saline (sal****er) filled, and thus is not affected by pressure changes." but I have no way to validate it since it is the exact opposite of what my would-be surgeon said.
I would appreciate any input on this! Thanks a lot!

Hi Leimomi,
Welcome to the board, it's nice to have some more folks around.
And also, GOOD LUCK on the 15th, thats not to far away is it?
You replied to one of my posts so I had a choice,do I reply from that poste, or to this one, choice made here, but I will respond to both places here.
Were you in Cozumel before or after Huricane Emily, and if after, how did the reefs make out through it all?
I've wondered about doing some diving under the ice, ask your husband what thats like if he's done it, you know the questions, whats it look like, whats there to see, that kind of thing.
One day you two will have to share some diving stories with us. But for right now you've got enough getting ready to happen.
Welcome again and again good luck
Earl

Hi Earl
I am scheduled for my RNY surgery August 15, 2005. My doctor is also a diver too!
I am looking forward to having this surgery and to lose the weight and be a happy and healthier diver that I want to be!
I just came onto this website, I am a diver from Juneau Alaska. My husband is Cert. PADI, TDI, SDI NAUI both Recreational Staff Instructor and Wreck Diver; Cave Diver.
I am a recreational diver who loves the open ocean. We have traveled all over Mexico and Belize to find great dives and we did!
I tried the drysuit here in Juneau, and the 39-46 degree water temp..but guess what...I am tropics girl! Brrrr..just the thought of having to dive cold water and feeling my face go numb!

I am so glad to have found this website. I am scheduled for my RNY surgery August 15, 2005.
I have been a diver for nearly seven years now. We just had gotten back from Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen on a diving trip.
Both my husband and I live here in Juneau, my husband is my support what will happen to me. I know that he is very concerned and he wants only the best health care for me.
My husband has witness my hardships in trying to lose the weight for several years. I know it has been frustrating for him, because right now I can't do things together like we use to do like walking; my knees starts to hurt if I go a long while hiking or walking. We use to enjoy those things together.
My present weight is 269 lbs. My goal is to lose 70% of weight; goal weight is between 125-134 lbs. Before we had children, my weight was at 125-126 lbs.
He has been my coach at the gym and nutritionist, I am so grateful for his support. I am excited about this surgery. I have battled this weight loss since 1999. My doctor and I have agreed that I needed this surgery, or else my health would have complications if I continued to be over weight.

Just found th...
I have been on numerous snorkle trips and I will tell you this - at over 200 pounds I finally found the perfect sport for me! seriously - I float with hardly any help at all!
Even with a bad neck and back it is the best thing I have ever done in my life!
And snorkling can be more beautiful than diving as you can move over shallow reefs without harming them!
John Pennecamp in Florida is about the most perfect place to snorkle! the groups are large BUT the area they take you too is perfect and they dont rush you like the snorkle/dive boats do.
It never hurts to try. Many places havve local lessons in pools where it is very safe to learn!
