They carry it at our local grocery store. I wonder if it's like I remember with that strong molasses smell. It was fun watching my dad 'open' the bread on both ends and pu**** out. Did I like it? I'm not even sure.

I liked it and I still do. I only eat it like once every three years and I never eat hot dogs, but oven warmed brown bread with raisins and buttered up? Yum.

How did that whole tradition start? So many families had franks, beans, canned brown bread. Was it from a TV show? Julia Child? There was no social media. How did word get around?

I always thought it was a New England thing, but west coast Lisa had it going on too. Maybe it's military thing too?

My parents were both born and raised in Maine!

Mystery solved - it IS New England tradition! I think B&M bread is a Maine company to boot!

definitely would not have been Julia Child. Her mission in life (well, mid- and late life) was to get people to eat more gourmet type of fare and not the crap most Americans were eating a few decades ago. She didn't get into food until she moved to France and fell in love with French cooking (so much so that she went to a French cooking school). She can be credited with changing the way Americans eat (I think it was the pre-Child crap we ate that gave the US a bad reputation for food). Anyway, I have no idea where everyone got the idea to eat franks, beans, canned brown bread, etc - but yea, it's weird that so many families at that way. Maybe TV commercials? I have no clue...
