What's on your Thursday Menu?
on 7/6/23 3:14 am
Good Morning and Happy Thursday! I am having a nice lazy morning. I worked my butt off yesterday! I had a to-do list that was over a page typed and it was very satisfying to cross most of it off. I have more to do today, and I might also go get a mani-pedi. I haven't gotten my nails done since before the pandemic! But I should probably try to look nice for Sunday, so I'll go. I'm getting my hair chopped off on Saturday, too.
QOTD: If Netflix made a show that was based exactly on your life (even the secret parts) would people watch? I watched an episode of Black Mirror last night called Joan is Awful. The premise is that when she signed her Netflix terms she agreed to have her life used, and she woke up to find that everyone was watching this show about her life. It was horrifying. My show would be so boring. Cats, baking, papers. Yawn.
Accountability: omg, I was so hungry and pathetic yesterday morning. I made my eggs and accidentally dumped half of the bottle of pepper on them. I had to throw them out and I almost cried out of frustration because I hadn't had more than 200 calories for the last 2 days. I finally managed a few real meals and reemerged as a normal person again. I even had ham! Ended the day at 540 calories.

Good morning QJB and menuers,
I forgot to say congratulations for cranking out your schoolwork and getting everything turned in early! Hope you enjoy mani/pedis. I feel your frustration and am glad you got some food yesterday, even if it was ham.
QOTD- I'm no Truman show. Maybe during trips. The rest of the time I think it would end up like some Being John Malkovich bad dream experience.
Well, I'm channeling my inner Jen while I'm here, apparently. I keep getting up at 4am, so making the most of it. I've already done all dog stuff, cleaned up, sorted the kitchen, made tea, logged into work, and prepped to make oatmeal/peach/blueberry muffins for breakfast. Whew. Lots of work to do today, so will dig I'm here shortly.
The lamb roast yesterday was phenomenal. It's the most I've ever worked a piece of meat in my life (yeah, have fun with that phrase) and I've never made a roast that size before. The butterflied cut, 24 hour marinade and regularly working it in seemed to make a difference. Would definitely do it again when I'm feeding more than me.
It's also been a special request by my mother that we work on a type of mandarin orange cake she wants to make for my sister for her wedding. I hear all the cool kids are making them these days. What I know about making cakes that don't come from boxes is limited, so this will be learning for us both.
Exercise has been dog walking but I'll try their elliptical tonight since it's on offer.
Accountability has been thimbles of wine, almost literally. I'm pleased with the size of the glass for portioning. I will eat an oatmeal muffin.
Menu today is the muffin, leftover lamb and charcuterie. Maybe chicken but I'm trying to get them to eat leftovers. Smoked clams. Leftover bruschetta, tomato and cucumber salad.
Off I go! Happy Thursday.

"glad you got some food yesterday, even if it was ham."
What the hell is that supposed to mean? There are millions of people who would kill for a nice ham.

I'd be happy to share with those poor, ham-deprived people.
I am on the same bench as JB...have not managed to enjoy ham but it's not for lack of trying. I am open to your top-shelf ham suggestion, though with your hamspertise, I have high expectations!
I've had everything from Honeybaked to Sam's choice to fancy uncured artisan hams, so...hit me!
Oh...I did like the prosciutto de Parma this week. Shaved very thin. So...win?

Prosciutto di (not de) Parma
Means prosciutto that comes from Parma. In Italian we don't have "de".

It's the wee words that I've never figured out. Die, Das, Der? They have genders? What the heck makes der masculine and die feminine? Drives me crazy. If people don't have to have genders, we're still making all nouns have a gender! Rise up, I say, rise up!

I think your are referring to German.
The "di" I was speaking of means from and doesn't have a gender.
Grim è di Massachusetts.
QJB è di Massachusetts.
Prosciutto è di Parma.
But I get it that certain things, even inanimate objects, in foreign languages have a gender and it doesn't make sense at all.
la sedia = the chair, feminine
il tavolo = the table, masculine
Who decided the chair is a girl but the table is a boy? Maybe the chair is binary and prefers the they/them pronouns. Can we just go with they/them for everything?

Yes, German. I can read a little German and French, but cant speak either. I can speak a passable English. I know zero about Italian.
Translating is easier, because the gendered nouns all become genderless. In speaking, it matters. When I first studied a language I believed the gender should make sense. Some things struck me as masculine, and some as feminine. The pretty hair ribbon should be feminine, right? Ha! It's indecipherable in that way. So now there's two things to memorize instead of just one.
Yes! They/them for everything!
