Agreed! I will draw the line at fantasy sci-fi (I just can't do it anymore!) but otherwise, I have been exposed to so many things that are not part of my preferred genre that I've loved or at least helped me expand my world! My bookclub has been together for over 15 years with the same core people and we all love different things, so I have been exposed to so much I would never have read without their influence.

That is amazing your book club has been together for so long. I like a book that is e to while thought provoking so a good disco can be had.

I totally like reading or viewing books and films out of my comfort zone. For example, we've read and watched genres in both my book and film groups that I'd never pick up on my own - like sci fi or fantasy fare - but the films I'm referring to aren't of a genre that's not me - they're just bad films. I remember the last stink bomb was so awful that no one except the person who picked it actually finished it. It was just a waste of time and brain cells. That's the kind of thing I want to avoid. I'm getting more conscious of wasted hours in my old age...

I left a book discussion (aka book club) because my suggestions were never taken into consideration. I don't like groups that only 1-2 people make the decisions, I prefer a democracy.

we've strongly encouraged people to send us suggestions, because I do want people to have input. And we'll definitely use them unless they're truly awful films.

well, my MIL just emailed me and slammed me for this idea, too (having a couple of us vet the movies). But there's no rule that we can't change it. We'll see how it goes for a couple of months and then discuss. It's easier to loosen up than tighten up. I'd just rather people put some thought into it rather than pull something out of thin air. I'm remembering one movie in particular that everyone hated and didn't finish watching. It had terrible reviews, too. Where did she come up with this thing? It must have been one of those that went directly to DVD. This is also the same woman who comes to the meetings withou****ching the films half the time. No one can figure out why she even joined the group. Someone suggested to me afterward that we have a committee start picking them instead, but I said no because it would be too awkward. So we started out with this method (vetting) with this newly formed group. Today was our first meeting. We'll see how it goes. I'm certainly open to making changes.
