I can't remember if we used slide rules in school, but I knew how to use one. My father was a PhD student in the 60s (economics) and he used them all the time. He showed me how to use them. His first calculator looked a lot like yours. Oddly, I remember the brand - "Datakins". We were so excited about it. It basically did little more than arithmetic (probably square roots, too), and I remember that it cost a fortune. But then, it was the latest technology back then - we were amazed by it!!

We had the World Book Encyclopedia at home and they sold a calculator like that. It was one of the first produced, but I don't think it did square roots. I never used a slide rule, but think I tried to teach myself once and gave up. I also was fascinated by the abacus.

I did have some method for doing square roots that worked, but no idea now of how I did it. I was in the secretarial program so worked with adding machines in high school and no real math programs. By the time I went to college in my 30's everything was done on calculators.

Good morning ~ Enjoy your trip and lunch with DCgirl! Lots of work to get done in 5 hours today, but I've got this. I'm going to enjoy every minute of the 3 day weekend then it's going to be work nuts for months training while doing 2 jobs. Meeting my sister for lunch today. Seafood at the coast - what could be better? A glass of wine sounds fabulous but I definitely won't do that.

Mornin' All!

the program yesterday was fabulous - FABULOUS! The location, the sound, the turnout, the way the presentation flowed between the professor talking about the music (of the Vietnam War era) and the band playing the songs. So, so many compliments afterward - one man said it was the best program they'd ever had over there (I booked it at one of the big retirement communities in town, since they have a great auditorium). So now I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't have told the committee I wanted to step down after this program? (although I'd get back on if they're able to recruit more people - it was a pain booking all of the lectures myself. Although maybe if the rest of my life wasn't so packed with various other activities (plus of course, "the moms"), this year wouldn't have been as crazy.

not much planned for the weekend, but that's fine - I like spontaneity. I'm going to go to a water fitness class in about an hour, then I'm meeting a friend for an early lunch in a town about 45 minutes away. Oh - and my cookbook group meets tomorrow, so I'll be making sweet potato bread (or sweet potato muffins - same recipe) sometime today (the cookbook we're reviewing - and using - is on the history of African American cuisine - great background material and recipes - although I think it's likely to be a real carb fest tomorrow..)

QOTD: Trish the perpetual student

B: skyr with fruit, coffee with half & half

L: (at a Mexican place) - probably the vegetable fajita or a couple of street tacos

AS: protein shake

D: two chicken skewers with either grilled veggies or bagged salad

here's a picture of the band rehearsing on Wednesday (the day before the actual program). So glad I got to hear them twice - they really are great! (they're all vets (one an Iraq War vet - the rest Vietnam))

Have a great day, everyone!

Maybe take the year and have more time for the other stuff? If you find yourself missing this commitment, you can volunteer again later.

Good morning, everybody!

I was up early today and made it to 6:30 CrossFit. Showering then heading to the airport for a late morning flight.

We have a happy hour tonight and then the concert. Tomorrow is brunch, the Big 12 Championship for Baseball. I don't even know who is playing just looking forward to seeing the stadium. Tomorrow night is another happy hour and I head home Sunday morning.

Not much planned for the rest of the weekend, but I need to do Murph at some point and I would like to get some flowers for the house.

QOTD: I don't think those titles were self selected, but today I am feeling like James the Scaled as I try to get back into fitness after my vacation.

Pictures from Bermuda.

Menu is kind of up in the air (at some point literally) today.

Have a great weekend all!
