What's on your Thursday Menu?
Something Teeny said made me remember something. During my self-imposed exile from the world, we discussed this weight loss calculator in my nutrition class (the class on obesity and weight loss). It's the Pennington Weight Loss Calculator. The professor said that people believe that if you create a 3500-calorie deficit from your normal calorie intake/expenditure, you will lose a pound. And on one level, that makes sense. But that's not always true for most people. She said the Pennington scale is actually much more accurate/realistic. Plug some numbers in and see what you think. Actually, i do think this is much more realistic - or at least it is with me. I've been on-and-off concerned about what I've lost since Thanksgiving, thinking I must not be trying hard enough because I should have lost more weight by now. But no - according to this, I've actually exceeded what would have been predicted, according to this calculator:

P.S. Height would be your height in inches (if using imperial measurements)

I've thought this all along for myself anyway. Calories in/out are not that simple. At 150 pounds, I STARVED myself for weeks to get to 149 and I couldn't do it. I've been in stalls and gained weight for no apparent reason many times. I've also over eaten and ate my share of crap food - I'm no angel. I think there are so many other things at play individually. I think dieting since the 7th grade has done serious damage to my body as have illness, drugs/medication, genetics and so much more.

I completely agree with you, Amy. We only have to look at QJB's picture today to see how much variety there is in human anatomy. I don't know why our energy management systems would be any different.
