I also drank a lot of diet coke before surgery. I haven't had one since. I have tasted a small sip when someone in the family has a new flavor they want me to try. I am staying away from the carbonation since I don't need anything else producing intestinal gas (I get plenty from the fiber in my salads despite Gas-X supplementation).

I drank Powerade Zero for about 2 years after surgery, and got tired of it. I went back to diet soda. I never cared for it super fizzy, and use a 30 Oz Yeti, and fill from 2 liter bottles. It comes out less fizzy that way.

I've had plenty of soda over the past few years, but not recently. My NUT said no soda/carbonation for 6 mo post op, then it's fine or as tolerated.

I have stayed away from Diet Coke (my pre WLS addiction) since the surgery. But in the last year or so I've been having bubbly water, topo Chico, on and off. I wonder if bubbly water is as bad as a soda.

"as bad as soda" do you mean from the carbonation or for some other reason? A few years ago I read something about how for RNY the "carbonation can stretch your pouch" is a myth -- I can't remember where I read it but it made sense to me, essentially the myth is that the carbonation builds up in your pouch and expands it....this might be true for the sleeve which still has the valve but since we don't have it, it's like saying a balloon with a hole in it might still get too full of air. I'm clearly not a medical professional...or even moderately articulate when describing this, lol. Essentially, if it doesn't make you uncomfortable, it's not bad for you (assuming it's no cal sparkling water or soda). I don't drink diet soda but just because I never liked it, I figure my (now infrequent) 0 cal sweeteners in my coffee are the same though!

I was thinking of the carbonation. I noticed even with some water (Pellegrino) I can't drink them, gotta let them go flat. But Topo Chico somehow it seems to have smaller bubbles, if that makes any sense at all.
Thanks for that info about being a myth. My center did tell me to never drink soda because of that.

I drink a lot of sparkling water and there are definitely ones that are more bubbly/have to drink slower or flatter for sure!

It's definitely a myth. Some people are just more uncomfortable with the carbonation. JB still does care for more than a little.

I want to like diet soda because I was an addict before surgery and obviously we have plenty of it flowing around here, haha. But the bubbles really bother me and I can only have a few sips before I feel full to the point of uncomfortable and start to hiccup.
I think having that sweet taste in my mouth all day makes me want more sugar.
