And, people who were considered "fat" aren't even close by today's standards.

Yep that was me back then. Today I would have not been considered fat at all. Women dress size measurements have also expanded to accommodate (Vanity sizing). A size 8 in todays stores was a 12 back in the 60's.

Women's clothing sizes now are just crazy. I currently wear everything from an 8-10 from Walmart to a 16 by DKNY that I barely fit into. I almost prefer 1960s sizing if it was actually standardized.

there was an article we read in my nutrition class awhile ago that discussed this. Obesity rates gradually went up throughout the 20th century, but it was around 1980 that they REALLY started to skyrocket. So this has been a fairly recent phenomenon. Probably a bunch of reasons - people didn't go to restaurants very often in the 60s (or before) (we only did when we traveled - although very occasionally my dad would come home with McDonald's hamburgers or a bucket of KFC, and it was so rare that it was a real treat!), most moms stayed home so they were able to cook most of the meals (and didn't rely as much on convenience foods), kids used to play outside a LOT more than they do now. When we were kids, if we didn't have school (which we walked to, btw), we'd go outside after breakfast and often didn't come home until dinner time. Then we'd be back outside after dinner playing Hide & Seek (or whatever) with the other neighborhood kids until the parents started yelling for us to come home. Not many kids do that anymore.

also, not only do people go out to restaurants A LOT more now, the portions are a lot bigger. They compared a thing of French fries from the 60s to a thing of fries now - huge difference. Same with soda.

I think people would revolt now if restaurant portions mirrored recommended serving sizes. I remember once when I was a hostess at a popular chain restaurant, a woman who was SMO got loud and complained at the size of the apple crisp she received versus the size she perceived it would be from the picture on the menu. She was big mad over some ice cream and cinnamon crumbles. I was flabbergasted 23 years ago. Can't imagine it's gotten better.

Yes everyone was so thin. A truly obese kid was really really rare, but treated with more compassion it seemed. It was thought they couldn't help it, they were born that way. At least in my grade school. They were not bullied.

I think I will go with Lurch from the Adams Family (butler/maid). Second choice would be Berta from 2 and a half Men. Of course I could always pick some random name!
