The problem with old solid wood doors are finding proper springs. New doors are lighter, and use springs rated for lower weights. The springs capable of lifting very heavy doors are disappearing.
The bearings in pulleys these days are crap. The time between replacing mine are less and less.

yep. We used to go through springs every couple of years until we called this company (the two guys in their 60s - whom we've been using ever since). They said it's because standard springs aren't going to hold a 300+ lb door for very long. They special ordered some heavy-duty springs for us that so far have lasted 25 years. But yea - the one who was out here yesterday said that was the problem. The door itself would last forever - but hardware eventually gives out, and it's getting harder and harder to find hardware that'll support that kind of a door.
Get another set of springs for when these give out. That should last your lifetimes.

I really like "fix" guys, vs the auto replace guys!

me too! People who fix things and who've been at it for years know what they're doing and are generally a lot more knowledgeable. So many of these newer companies hire on people with very little experience for cheap - but they don't really know how things work. They just tell you to replace whatever it is. I feel the same way about hardware stores. We have a small, locally-owned one three or four blocks away. Most of the employees are middle-aged and older men who know the products inside and out and they also know how to fix things. They're great at explaining how to do this or that - or they can recommend someone who can do whatever it is that needs doing. There used to be one guy who worked there who's since retired. I think he must have been the world authority on paints and stains. He knew EVERYTHING about them. Anyway, so different than Home Depot. Occasionally you'll find some knowledgeable person at Home Depot, but usually, no.

I've lost a few posts over the past few weeks. That or it double posts responses.
