What's on your (PHOTO) Friday Menu?
I want to write a book about my childhood. I was born in 1948, so not that long after World War 2. One of my classmates was from a family that had come here from a European country. His grandmother had been mentally ill. One day the Nazis came and dragged her out to the road and shot her until she died.
Her teenage daughter was sent to live in a convent. She cooked and cleaned for the nuns and at night, the priests came to her room and forced her to have sex with them. She would sneak to the basement and drink the communion wine to deal with her pain.
She was in a concentration camp when she met her husband and later married. After the war, they were sent to the US and her husband had a job in the steel mill. She had three boys, kept a spotless house and did washing and ironing for other people. Some days she would drink so much alcohol that she would pass out and sleep for a day or two."
Her husband had lung cancer. When he was too weak to hold his cigarette, she would sit by the bed and hold the cigarette so he could smoke. After the husband died, she told her oldest son (16) that he had to be the man of the house. That included all of his father's duties. He had to sleep with his mother and take care of her sexual needs.
That son ended up married a few times and when about 30, he was in a car with a woman not his wife and they were both killed in a traffic accident. There are other stories from that time.
Everyone knew but no one interfered with parental abuse. We had one neighbor who lived five houses away who beat her kids all the time. I remember my father sitting with tears running down his face as we listened to her screaming and her kids crying with pain.
