His question is why EE and not CE? If your son wants to become a digital circuit designer or computer engineer CE is more useful.

I think he goes back and forth between big EE (like power plants) and small EE (circuits). Right now he is EE with Power Systems concentration and CE minor.

It should depend on what he likes to do. DH is in circuit design biz and the growth in this industry is breath taking. In Silicon Valley employability is more towards CE than EE, and the industry doesn't show any sign of slowing down. But he insists that your DS should do whatever he likes. If he has any interest in power delivery system, ASIC design, biomedical or automotive he should pursue those and possibly do an internship while still in school.
