I am a long term Bypass patient. I had my surgery years ago (2011) and the last several years I have been experiencing some significant issues. Massive amounts of pain and pressure in my stomach, full or empty... constant nausea... stalled out weight loss. And food makes me want to hurl... seriously... nothing wants to stay down. I have been to see no less then 4 doctors about this all gastroenterologists and all of them have lectured me on having had the surgery in the first place. But other then trying to change up my 24 heartburn pill (again and again ad nauseum), they say there is nothing wrong that they can find. Am I alone in this... nothing at all is appealing, and honestly my husband damn near has to force feed me most days because I can't bring myself to eat. Please can someone suggest something. My surgeon was in Germany (the army paid for my surgery when I was an Army Wife)... and has since retired, so I can't ask him... I am at my wits end. Thank you sll in advance of any advice or suggestions you give.

dehydration can cause nausea. Are you drinking a minimum of 64+ ounces of sf liquid a day?

darkmoonsfalcon,

Ok lets see what we can figure out to help you.YOU are NOT alone.

.I am also a Long term gastric by pass. My surgeon stopped doing surgeries about 5 years after my surgery (25Yrs ago)He taught the surgery over the world... Mine was a hybrid surgery.. i have bandings above my pouch and below it. also had my appendix gall bladder and most of large intestine removed. I have a chronic gastritis. My surgeon installed a port n case i should ever need to access my old stomach.... for g tube or for testing. it has never been opened. My Moms had to be and we fed her without issue thru it...after she had a massive stroke.( My Mom had same surgery by same specialist 6 months before i did.)

IS there a gastric by pass office in same place- maybe one of his associates or someone who has followed in his steps.?

Have you had any tests done to confim you have no obstructions.?

THIS sounds like you may have a stricture at one of the places your bowel has been resected.( I am assuming it was an open abdominal surgery- like i had) this would cause all of your symptoms. a medicine to relax the bowel... like bentyl might help, if this is the problem. It is a prescription. You might see if a family doctor would give you a trial of 10 capsules.. to try it. It is an old drug so if you can get it should not be expensive. The only medication that works for my high acid, and frequent gastritis..is prevacid. when am n distress i take 30 mg 2 times a day.i get the generic across the counter and take 2./dose..

What position are you in when you eat?

If you are sitting at a table...sit in a straight chair, and sit up as tall as you can...or stand.elongate your torso.Just try it... I have a "pinch point" a few inches below my pouch- it is not the banding but in a section of straight gut blow the pouch- about 3-6 inches... if i am in early gastritis it will close off. sitting upright or standing and walking a few steps between bites.helps me.

Cut out all fats.everything you can cut. mayo=my number one offender of gut in first few years...after surgery. If i get a bite of fat in first 2 bites- i must still stop eating.Chicken thighs have a lot of fat in the meat go thru it and pick out any morsels of fat before you consume...UNTIL you are certain this is not PART of your problem

Slow down...warm liquids will increase the motility thru your gut.

Since you are having trouble getting anything to go down: try sipping warm liquid with first 2 bites.. a good choice would be bone broth.(coffee or spiced tea even warm water would work.) it is full of minerals and protein.( the liquid gelatin that sets up after you have made a roast in oven and chilled the liquids) chicken, beef, pork.

Nutrition_Do you tolerate milk? Protein shakes? I would start with liquid protein....and add only one at a time. Do you eat fruit? if you are eating banana's stop..til you figure this out...

absolutely need protein and needs to be easily digest-able.even if you need to puree it and add cooking juices.to thin it.try for 3 bites at first, try it with a saltine,or snack cracker.

make sure you chew your food VERY well. baskin robbins tasting spoons size and chew every bite 20 times..

Poached eggs served over 2 tbsp of rice goes down well for me when I first begin eating after gastritis.

Rice is the first thing i eat.when i begin eating after gastritis. Here is the way i treat it as far as liquids and food go...prevacid is first thing i use... and i use it heavily for 3 -4days.Nothing works better than it for me...if you have not tried it. it is available across the counter.. not expenisve.

IF YOU HAVE NO obstruction -your gut is swollen inside...Can you drink liquids? can you suck on ice to get in liquids??... cold liquids, ice and ice water, sip slowly and constantly... back off on food for 3 days... will shrink swollen tissues.. you may need to use ice for a few days very heavily..then add slowly....'' water, rice water, should be first order of day... add rice. 2-3 tablespoon..at a time max.to begin....once gut calms you should work up to 3/4 cup a day.. the add eggs, poached eggs, or prepared with only cooking spray in a skillet...just eggs first day.w/ rice.. progress as your stomach accepts and if you have probotics take those as you begin rice.

I am also a long-term post-RNY patient. Had mine in 2008, lost 100% of my excess weight (it should be noted, I was what's often called a "lightweight" in the bariatric community), and I've maintained my weight loss for nearly 13 years, but it hasn't been without its challenges - namely, I have off and on suffered with the kind of stuff it sounds like you're experiencing, and have had to have 3 additional surgeries because of various issues. 1 for a broken gallbladder at 8 months out and 2 for strictures/internal hernias. The first of those was at 2 years out (while pregnant with my daughter) and the second was at 8 years out. For both strictures/internal hernias, I visited the ER several times before finally calling my original RNY surgeon, and he immediately- both times - suspected obstruction even though CT scans, ultrasounds and blood tests done in ER had all come back "normal." He was correct both times, confirmed through surgery. And each time, the surgery to repair the obstructions completely alleviated my symptoms.

I would urge you to reach out to another bariatric surgeon in your current area. They are the only ones truly familiar with our re-routed digestive tracts, and the ones best suited to help alleviate any negative symptoms we might be having.

I hope you're able to get relief soon!! I know how painful and frustrating those kind of symptoms can be.

xoxo,
Tricia
