Drinking 150 grams of protein on day 5??

I had roux en y a year ago and am down almost to goal. My husband decided to follow suit and had roux en y on Monday, 5 days ago. On day 3, he was drinking the recommended 64 ounces of fluids already. This surprised me but the nurse was happy about it when she called to check on him that day.

However, today I discovered that between Thursday and today, he drank at least 4 bottles (11-1/2 ounce each), per day of protein shakes plus he drank another 16 ounces of protein shake from mix. This is over 6 cups (is supposed to have up to 1/2 cup 3 times a day this week) and over 150 grams.

Besides wondering why would you go through all of this and then do this, I'm wondering what kind of damage could this do. Our digestive tracks need rest to heal.

I guess I'm looking for confirmation that this is bat-guano crazy and has anyone heard of this kind of thing? What can I do? This is causing incredible stress.

Oh, and despite what my ticker says, I'm down to 135. I can't figure out how to change it. ?

Click the gear at the top right of the screen and then select ticker from the drop down and then you can update from there.

When I do that, it just offers me the option for a new ticker. Do I do that and start another one? Thanks!

Do you not have the edit button at the bottom of your existing ticker when you get to the same screen that gives you the option of new ticker?

I can't imagine drinking that much protein that close to after surgery! I am unsure if that ok or if it really is detrimental. I would definitely ask about it through y'all's bariatric surgeons office.

I had a hard time drinking water and the protein drinks for more than a few months after my revision to RNY.

He should be following his medical plan for sure and the guideline typically are designed to offset the lack of sensation immediate post op and give everything time to heal.

Given liquids flow pretty much straight through with RNY, my non-medical professional opinion wouldn't think there would be "damage" but he clearly is relying on physical signals vs weighing and measuring as he was probably told to do.

You should have him talk to his medical team, unless you are planning on a permanent role as food police for him.

I was able to get all my fluids in right away (I know a lot of people struggle with this, but I never did). As PartlyPollyanna said, fluids go right through you, so I wouldn't worry about damage. The PA at my clinic told me my stomach would let me know if I was drinking too much/too quickly. As for protein, I didn't get nearly that many grams in that early (actually, I still don't at almost seven years out). It's because he's drinking it. Unless his clinic is recommending that much protein from the get-go (most recommend 60 grams, not 150!), he should probably swap a couple of those protein drinks for some other kind of fluid. Have him check with his clinic.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I left a message with the dieticians at the hospital at which we had our surgeries. He is high risk for developing new addictions as had numerous addictions in his life, and, quite frankly, I was surprised he was even okayed for surgery. I guess him not following the recommendations shouldn't surprise me a bit.

And NO!!!!!!, I do not want to police his diet. That is a really good point and something I will visualize every time I am tempted to say anything about his choices. I can usually ignore things he is doing that are contraindicated, but this was an "in your face" situation where I found nearly all my protein drinks gone. Since it's just him and me and I didn't drink them, well, you know.

I did try to address it with him but that is like talking to a wall. Nothing is his fault, there are super-good reasons (he read on the internet that extra protein will stop a plateau and prevent hair loss (he's nearly bald), etc.

It's good to know this likely won't cause him any damage, but I am concerned about Monday when he is transitioned to 1/4 cp pureed proteins. Aaackkk!! There I am, worrying about him rather than focusing on maintaining my own lifestyle changes.

I just discovered the emoticons, lol. Fun!
