How long did it take you to lose your excess weight
I'm sure this question has been ask a million times, but I'm wondering about it. I'm doing really well at this point and started wondering about how long it might take me to get the rest of the weight off. I'm 5 months out and have lost 83 pounds from my high weight and 48 pounds from my SW. I'm 5'2" and 66 yo. I'd like to set my goal at about 120 so I have a little room for bounce back. My surgeon and NUT do not set weight goals other than they want me to at least hit the 70% mark. They consider anything further to be gravy. Thanks!

I lost 120lbs in just over 5 months to reach a BMI of 21. This is very quick.
The goal is to lose as quickly as possible, so try to lose the excess in 12 months, it definitely gets harder the longer you take. People with a high BMI tend to take longer to get near their goal.
You're doing well, keep it up!

it's tough to answer that question because people's rate of weight loss depends on so many factors - age, gender, metabolic rate, activity level, how closely they stick to their program, starting BMI, what percentage of their body composition is muscle, etc etc etc. It took me 20 months to lose all my excess weight (originally, I lost 235 lbs but have gained back 20 of it) - but then I started out at a higher BMI than a lot of people here.

11.5 months to my goal weight (normal BMI). I was ultra on plan the whole time and worked out 30 min per day. My program did not give me a goal So I set my own.

There is no normal, but a pretty good average is 20 pounds the first month. Then 10 pounds a month for five months. Then five pounds a month for six months. 100 pounds in one year. It gets harder after six months and a lot harder after a year. It took me about 18 months and it was harder every month. Lost as much as you can, as fast as you can. Count calories and exercise.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
I found that most people take 12 months to lose weight. I had my surgery in 2006 and have talked to many in that time. There is room for more weight loss after that and you might not be at that BMI they write about, but you will be at the point where you feel skinny, you can pick something up off the floor while standing, you have more energy.
I went from 164 to 140 in 12 months. I started to put weight on a few years ago, I was up to 150 after hovering around 144 for many years. I made some changes and am now down to 135. It is where I always wanted to be and I am working to stay here.
I want to add one thing. NEVER EAT SUGAR AGAIN!!!!! The people I know who gained the weight back all got to the point where they didn't dump because they slowly started upping how much sugar they would allow in their food. This includes sodas and other drinks, which will make you gain weight even faster. I still look for 5 grams or less per serving, because I can't eat a serving. I have sugar-free options that satisfy me every day. (Sugar-free does not mean low calorie).
My general advice as you drop the weight, don't weigh every day, take measurements over the scale, exercise, and, this is a big one, you will go for weeks with no loss of pounds, then they will drop like dust on your freshly cleaned furniture. Oh and you are unique, this is a journey that only you will take. It will be different from everyone else. Just the roadsigns are similar.
