I had Laparoscopic RNY Surgery on 8-17-2008. All went well for the first 2 months then I had black stools and my Bariatric Surgeon discovered that I had a bleeding ulcer... I was put on Omeprazole to help with the healing. Twice over the past 11 years I tried to wean myself of of Omeprazole and wound up back in the hospital due to a bleeding peptic ulcer. I was told that I have to take Omeprazole for the rest of my life because if the ulcer gets bigger each time it returns, I would have to have a revision surgery to move the connection to my small intestine, it was right next to the ulcer that NO one detected till it started bleeding. It never hurts, just starts bleeding and I know when I see blood in my stools it's back.

I'm another one that needs to take omeprazole for life. I did have HB/GERD before surgery, but not after. I did the 3 months of omeprazole and after I quit it, I got an ulcer. I do not have H pylori bacteria so, my surgeon suspects it's just excess acid production. After quitting again and having the ulcer return I won't stop the omeprazole. After 5 EGD's within a little over a year I'm not willing to take a chance on the ulcers returning again. I wi**** was the H pylori bacteria that would be easier to treat than what I've had to deal with. No regrets though. Since my Mom has osteopenia I have my concerns, but she was also not taking a calcium citrate supplement, just calcium carbonate. Not sure why her doctor didn't tell her to take the right kind of calcium supplement, but due to this forum I definitely know the difference. Hopefully this will help her body to absorb it better.
