Mornin' All!

another rainy afternoon and evening are in store for us - and humidity - so I'll need to get out and do something this morning. I rode my bike yesterday - boy did that thing kill my bony butt. I've read it can take awhile to get used to those hard saddles but some people come to prefer them when they've been riding for awhile, so maybe I'll get one of those gel seat covers rather than replace the saddle with a cushy one. I'll have to think about this... Otherwise, it was great. I'm continuing to look for a good bike for DH so we can ride together. Anyway, I may go walking or go to the gym this morning instead, though - but we'll see. I have a Zoom meeting at 11:00, so I'd better decide soon since the weather isn't going to be conducive to outdoor activities this afternoon.

accountability was great yesterday - and it will be today as well!

QOTD: my father was hugely into his heritage (esp his Swedish side - i.e., paternal. His mother's parents were born in Scotland). I've played around with family history the last couple of years, but I wouldn't say I identify much with my heritage. All of my great grandparents were born in Europe, though, and moved here when they were young adults, so my parents grew up with European traditions and hearing their parents and other relatives speaking their native languages (my mother's paternal line was also from Sweden, and her maternal line was ethnic German, although they lived in what is now Romania (it was Austria at the time - but a lot of European borders were re-drawn after World War 1). I have lots of 2nd, 3rd, and so on cousins who still live in Europe and have have "met" many of them through DNA tests. But I don't follow any customs or cuisines of those countries.

S1: protein shake

have a great day, everyone!

When I decided to start bike riding with DH and he bought me a bike, I quickly broke down and bought a cushy seat. It was not all that expensive and more than worth every penny!

I'll look into them - thanks!! I also noticed the seat on my old bike is wider and cushier than the one on my new bike. I would guess these things might be interchangeable - I might try putting the cushy one on my new bike tonight...

An interesting family secret was my godmother was Hungarian. I learned that her father was not Hungarian at all. He was from Sweden and he had stolen the name, passport and identity of a Hungarian man and used that all his life.

I think that's the best part about doing genealogy - finding out all these weird things that you (and possibly no one else) ever knew!

Good morning all! I started to text my boss this morning and let her know that I'd be working today since we got back a day early from vacation, but the more I thought about it I felt like I needed a day to recoup. Yesterday was stressful and I got home late since my fathers truck broke down on the drive back home and we had to wait on a tow truck. Once I finally got home that evening and got everything unpacked, laundry done, floors vacuumed and cleaned (cat threw up on the carpet and had hair everywhere), I was exhausted! So it's back to work tomorrow as originally planned. I think I'm going to check my emails at least today to try and catch up as I'm sure I have lots!

Accountability yesterday was a wee bit better and I mean only a wee bit! But today it's back to my strict diet! No ifs ands or buts about it! My stomach has been a wreck anyway. I got on the dreaded scale this morning. First time since vacation and I was up almost 3 pounds. Ugh. But I have no one to blame but myself and I guess I should be thankful it could be worse! So I'll be working toward getting these 3 pounds of regain off so I can get back on track to getting closer to goal.

QOTD: No, not really. I've always been told by my parents I was about half German and half Irish. That both my mom and dads side were German and Irish. I figured I was definitely Irish because of the red hair and fair skin. Well a few years ago I did one of those DNA kits because I was interested in knowing. Not sure how accurate those things are though. I was expecting to find out what I already knew, but come to find out I'm only about 20% Irish, like 10% or less German and the rest English.

I believe the DNA tests are pretty accurate.

Three pounds after vacation isn't bad at all - if you go back to plan immediately it should come off pretty quickly.

the ethnic percentages they give you aren't always super accurate because they're based on comparing your DNA to the DNA of other people who've taken the test. If there are countries - or regions - that you have ancestors from, and not many of the people who live there - who had ancestors from there - have taken the test, then the percentages they give you aren't going to be really on target. Ballpark maybe, but not precise. For example, I always come out more heavily Swedish than I am on paper (50% of paper), because lots of people from Sweden take those tests.

also, if your ancestors are from somewhere that a lot of people emigrated away from years ago, then that country or region may not be reflected accurately in your ethnic percentage, either. My maternal grandmother's parents were born in Romania, but they were ethnic Germans. The Germans - and the Jews - who lived in that area at the time (and there were MANY) pretty much all left (or in the case of the Jews, were killed - or at least many of those who didn't leave were). The Germans went to the US, Canada, Brazil, the UK - and to modern-day Germany. So I show as having at least SOME ethnicity from a bunch of different areas that I know I do not.

the DNA matches that they give you, on the other hand (the list of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc cousins) IS pretty accurate, though, since it's based on how many DNA segments you share with them. Sometimes the relationship it assumes is off (for example, I have a first cousin twice removed who shows as a third cousin on my DNA match list), but still, you're related to them.

G'morning everybody!

JB - every time I see this meme it reminds me of Soylent Green

Beautiful day here. Not too hot, not foggy. Just absolutely gorgeous. DH has been going to work this week. He is in rotation; one week at work, three weeks from home. Last time around he stayed in a hotel, but this time considering DS is also going to work we didn't think it was necessary for him to stay away from home while at work. Anyway, we are winging it day by day, crossing fingers that people act smart and wear the darn masks.

QOTD: I declare myself the italian resident of OH. Am I considered generation 0 because I emigrated here, and my kids are first generation? DH is 5th generation Californian. For DD's 5th grade heritage project we went back on his side and discovered German, Irish, English and Slav. We actually have a pic of his family on wagons pull into into the main square of a town 4-5 miles south of us. I guess once they discovered the coast and this area, nobody else moved. Literally his whole family is here in an area of 10 miles, which is unusual for Americans. So our kids on his side are 6th generation Californians. In general though I'd say we are running this house the italian way, mom is always in charge! ;)

Accountability: I do really good all day but late afternoons have become a problem.

My meals yesterday:

  • B: protein coffee
  • L: 2 hb eggs + tuna
  • S1: Fage yogurt + 30 dark choc chips
  • S2: more choc chips :(
  • D: TJ shrimp stir fry
  • E: 6 miles wog

Have a great hump day.
