Vegan after WLS info
Wow. How triggered are you guys? There have been quite a few questions on a plant based diet after surgery. I found some answers and thought I'd share with those who are interested in the subject. Prefaced it with why I was personally looking. And some strange individuals have taken it as being told what they HAVE to eat. Taking it as a personal insult????? Totally crazy. Obviously some personal issues. One does wonder why you would even read a post about being vegan if you would be so offended by it???
I had some free time, and it really wasn't out of my way.
I have no problem with folks who promote what works for them. I do have a problem with those who spread false information and run down approaches that differ from their own.

You think those are facts because they came from two dieticians and a surgeon? Good Lord. You're going to have a rough time.

I just wanted to add that I've never heard that bariatric patients have a large rate of bowel cancer, and I've been involved with the bariatric community for about six years now. I HAVE heard that people who eat a lot of red meat (and/or processed meat) have a higher risk of bowel cancer, but that would include a lot of people in the general population - it's not exclusive to bariatric patients. And there are a lot of us who don't eat a ton of red meat.
we do have vegetarians on here, and even a few vegans now and then. It can be tougher for them (esp vegans), but not impossible.
I have also read that people who tend to eat large amounts of red meat have higher GI cancers; maybe since some post-ops eat a higher proportion of meat??? I don't know. I am vegan. WFPB, low oil, low salt (in a perfect world I'd be no sos but I'm human). I do what works for me and if people ask, I will give them the information I have (and I trust). My surgeon does recommend a whole food plant based diet (I was vegan long before my sleeve but I was a junk food vegan) and no it isn't easy to get everything I need but I definitely feel it's worth the effort.
Thank you for the post! I was also wondering about this topic and also if I could benefit from it as a lifestyle and continue to be a avid athlete and continue my Marathon training... So I went vegetarian/plant based for about a year... I truly enjoyed it but I could not sustain for my training... So I have scaled back to eating meat a little.. best if luck to you and keep me posted.... Thank you, Jeff
P.s.... I did get ridiculed for doing it also....
