Can you get the sleeve surgery after you have had the Roux-en-Y?

Also you were throwing up because it sounds like you were eating all the wrong stuff! Sugar after a though n y surgery will cause "dumping" which is what you are describing! I wish everyone could go through all the training my Doctor makes you go through before surgery!!

i have a strong one that you probably won't like but hear me out.

I had an open rny reversal due to nearly dying from gi bleeds primary, for 7 years, secondary was I had malasoprtion issues from h-ll and having a almost a dozen and half admissions from rny in 2010 which was lap and my reversal was done open.

I am gastric bypass and all the weight loss surgeries "friendly" and supportive but am more on the internet blogging about reversals because like there was NO information when I had mine in 2010.

I also fluctuate in weight wildly, as I first started gaining weight pre reversal, as I had a nervous breakdown and a suicide attempt when after my complications got bad.

I had my rny in 2001, 3 days after my 32nd birthday. My reversal was done in 9/2010, when I was 41 which was nothing short of a miracle that I lived that long, not because of psych reasons but medical ones.

I tried to commit suicide, first giving up custody of my beloved children one 15 1/2 and the other 5 1/2 in August of 2008.

My reversal was done in 2010, but I had gained a ton of weight not being able to eat anything starting in 2007 when I was put on a ton of psychotropics, getting more of the post suicide attempt.

My weight fluctuates wildly now. I was 233 at the time of my rny and at at my lowest which was a by product of developing a love of working out for the last 3 out of 6 years I was thin, was 126, but on average a 2-4 (had a lot of lean muscle mass and had gone to school to be a certified personal trainer but the time i got my certification I was too sick to work).

I have never gotten lower than the 160's and I'm 5'3 and now 50 years old and about 70 lbs heavier than my lowest adult weight from 2004 to 2007 and about 50 lbs less from my all time heaviest which I hit in 2018.

I can't eat much at times and sometimes the weight goes and sometimes I gain weight but I find I gain weight more that i drink alcohol.

I like a lot of reversed peeps have Gastroparesis and that can effect the amount you can eat and feeling full and I have 2 hernias from having an open reversal.

We all vary, but I think if you'd poll the reversed population online (there's a support group on Facebook) you'd find that most reversed peeps would not have any wls again and the amount you've gained isn't all that unusual. I've seen being the longest reversed peep actively blogging about it, once where someone who had a reversal in the 1990's did find a surgeon to do weight loss surgery again on them 20 years later but they had gained all their weight plus some and had all the cormobid's of Morbid Obesity which I never have had and even if I did at this point, I still would NEVER have another weight loss surgery.

I get all of our perspectives vary and for different reasons. I think that any ethical bariatric surgeon would be insane unless you are 2 feet tall and in the 160s and you have uncontrollable diabetes, super high cholesterol and sky rocketing blood pressure to even to see you.

I am saying this with the utmost kindness, try to evaluate why you drink beer, it's empty calories and carbs and the weight gain from it is making you think about having another bariatric surgery that not reversible when you first one was not with an ideal outcome, as they just don't do reversals without great consideration, if it's not a life or death situation or a serious quality of life one and where in a society that most women on average are a size 12/14 while you are not as thin as you were, you were seriously underweight and that comes with it's medical and mental health issues enough to require a serious intervention such as a reversal.

I had a a sister have rny and had an ideal bariatric outcome, doesn't ever in the last 17 1/2 years can eat what she wants, travel and all she had to do was pick up intense exercise about 8 years ago to keep her weight off. I had a parent who had wls TWICE and is still SMO and can do more things than I can do and is almost 74 years old.

It doesn't help me to ask the "why" of my complications when my Dad and sister weren't any more compliant than I was, or why I had a gastric bypass when I was the only one in my family and among my friends where so many of them had weight loss surgery to get as sick as I did.

I find in my case when I can eat more normally, that I have a tendancy to release weight if I do that and do some form of exercise such as exercise and keep my calorie intake 1500-2000 range depending on how much I walk, I have to stay at 1500 when if my body is willing to release weight spread over in 2 meals and when I go under 1000 which I have more 500 calories a day than what i look like sometimes my body won't release weight at all but I am 4 years into menopause.

I can't though let what I eat what I weight and what I look like define me. I can no longer work, drive a car and have long and short term memory issues from the long term nutritional deficiencies, I have one kid who's almost 28 now, see me as a fully functional loving mother fall apart and one kid who has no memory of me being anything but a "sick mommy".

I can't compare myself against the old me fat or thin, let alone to anyone else, try to see if that's an issue, as well as far as with your drinking and you worrying about your weight and if you have no reversal support you can always find me at unstapledlisa at gmail (or my non monetized blog can be found if you google unstapledlisa) or check the blogs and vlogs by Misty T. who's vlogs under life in my frankenbelly and her reversal support group on Facebook is under Gastric Bypass Reverses.

Again, I remain as a positive support for anyone who has wls from optimal to catastrophic long term outcomes and I've seen wls work great for a lot of people.

And I have no right which I wouldn't, to try and scare people out of any of the bariatric surgeries.

But I have every right to say and feel that while I don't regret my gastric bypass and only regret the outcome, I would never ever EVER have any bariatric surgery ever again either, I'd rather be 600 lbs and have every comorbid under the sun due to Obesity than ever be that sick again.

Hopefully you'll find what is best for you and again I'm not saying it meanly, as I say this positively for others who had better outcomes, bariatric surgery is only one of the 3 b's of wls, there's the brain and the body, if you have the other 2, I think you're better off working on that than planning on trying to find a surgeon who would be a moron to operate on you with your current drinking situation and your current weight.

Peace, Lisa

I love this board, I've been on it since 10/2001 It might help though to find support from other reversed peeps. I have had to talk to many people into having a reversal who were going to die without one, into one, as I honestly get the going through everything we go through to being heavier than we would like, although in my case, you current weight is my goal weight the little I think about weight loss.

But I get the fear, to an extent, but being thin doesn't help if one is at risk at dying.

I wrote my 2nd response not seeing that you responded, I'm glad you saw my original reply in the light it was intended and again, I hope things work out the way you want to without risking another bariatric surgery.

I've looked into total gastrectomy in the past because of how much it sucks even though I have had rny peeps need those too and for us reversed and TG peeps, it's life long learning curve with weight and how little and how much sometimes in my case, that I can eat at 9 years post open reversal.

Keep me posted if you like and/or at least think about joining the reversal group... Peace...

p.s. The short answer though to your question is YES. But usually the mindset of doing a sleeve post reversal is done at the same time to reduce the chances of getting Gastroparesis versus the rare surgeon who's afraid of a patient getting the co-morbids of Obesity in a patient who's at risk of being severely underweight and malnourished of becoming heavy again.

p.s.s. There should be at least a sleeve peep in the reversal group I mentioned in first response.

p.s.s.s. And lastly, for what I've seen in the last 9 years helping others with their reversals, there was NO way I could just answer Yes or No without the "why".

I have severe chronic pain issues rny, reversal related and also some that aren't, and it's hard for me to be concise at all, especially on topics that I feel passionate about.

Again, don't misconstrue my intent, I believe in that weight loss surgery can help people as a last resort/intervention but I also learned the hardest way possible that there's worse things than being fat, worse things than being fat after a gastric bypass and worse things that being fat after a gastric bypass reversal, in the absolute worst ways possible. For me to have a shred of sanity I had to take my weight and how much and how little I can eat and still be this heavy vs. my sister who had rny almost 18 years ago, out of the equation.

I think only a surgeon would be able to answer that question for you. I would like to address the fact that beer is a sugar. You don't mention how much you have, but if you are saying the only thing you have that is not as to protocol is the beer, obviously, you have too much. Many alcoholics cannot eat sugar, potatoes, or other starches because the body reactis to them as it does to alcohol (most alcohol is fermented grains or potatoes which results in the high sugar levels. I suggest you try to cut down to no more than 8oz of beer a day and see if that changes your scale.

Ultimately, you need to see your doctor and discuss what will be best for you.

I started out at 203 in 2013......had my RNY....no problems..was done laparoscopic...no problems....until mar 2018. I weighed 128.....kept losing...had numerous endoscopys...found nothing..colonoscopys...found nothing.. was I drinking beer then...yes..and still losing weight...I would drink maybe 2 beers a weekend. If that makes me an alcoholic..then I guess I am. I kept in touch with my dr....I got to 103....and by reversal date a week later..I was 100 pounds... And in the last few replies..Ive stated I havent drank beer in months....Who isnt reading that part.........is this a bit more clear??

I have not been back on here for some time so I missed your private response.

the group I had referenced several years ago was reverses and takedown on FB.

yes, some surgeons will sleeve a reversed patient after some time there has been surgeons on occasion who've done takedowns and sleeved right after.

i hope you were able to find the support you needed, as well as feel the best you can.

while I've probably been one of the longest reversed peeps trying to help peeps all over the internet, I'm not on social media sites very much and because I still have a lot of health issues, it's easier to help people knowing there are much more support when they usually contact me privately thru my blog, but I do feel terrible if you felt I kept you hanging, that wasn't my intention.

Peace
