Hi all, I had a gastric bypass 8yrs
As Kim indicated, we probably need more info about "bypassing the bypass"
As for anemia - die to low iron and or B12, some people post op RNY have serious problem absorbing iron and need to relay on iron infusions once in a while.
Some doctors and nutritionists tell people, men and post menopausal women that they dont need to take iron long term, or not as much as we really need. Normal population that is mostly true but for post op WLS person - we only know if anc how much iron we need to take by getting frequent blood work and monitoring the changes in iron and stored iron (ferritin)
If you are anemic due to low iron, most likely oral iron alone would not bring your numbers back sufficiently or fast enough. Sone of us when our iron drops really low, we get iron infusions, then try to supplement with oral iron to try to maintain adequate levels.
Low B12 can also cause or contribute to anemia. Post op RNY we most likely dont nake enough if any intristic factor to be able to absorb B12 when taken orally. Most people do great on sublingual B12 (readily available) and some require B12 shots (Rx).
Last but not least - when they would run your lab work again, make sure they also test copper. Post op WLS some of us have a problem absorbing and maintaining that mineral. As with most vitamins and minerals, we need enough, but not too much. We can't just take "a bunch of" them. We need testing to find out their level, then add more to the daily supplementation IF needed.

I am a pre-op and am fearful of something happening with this. But, I am willing to understand and do anything at this point... hurdles and all! This is the first I have seen someone "bypassing" their bypass. I hope whatever you are experiencing is fixable. I also find the answers from the members above very informative. I'll have to look those up. Please keep us updated on anything that should come from your doctor!
