I'm scheduled for roux-en-y on January 6th ,and I'm trying to follow the pre op diet. I cannot believe how ridiculous I've felt over saying goodbye to certain foods. I would never before call myself a food addict... Now I'm just not so sure. Is this normal??

It is normal and you are not saying goodbye forever, just saying see you later. There is no food that you cannot eat again after weight loss surgery.

After surgery, you do want to stick to high protein and low carbs until your new habits are firmly established. That takes about two and a half years. Then you can start to add some of the high sugar, high carb things very sparingly.

If you go back to eating like you did before surgery, then you can go back to weighing what you did before surgery.

So you have to be able to control your eating and if you cannot control a food or beverage, then you do have to say goodbye forever to that substance.

I spent my time before surgery looking at dresses in tiny sizes and in less than a year after my surgery, I was buying and wearing those size 4's. Keep your thoughts on the great things that are waiting for you. Weight loss surgery is a tool that you can use to really change your appearance and your health. It is like getting the wish from the genie in the lamp. Enjoy the whole experience. It is far better than any food.

You don't have to say goodbye to food. I am 2 years out and only avoid complex carbs. The diet after the healing stages allows you to eat most everything just in smaller portions and not every day but you can have a treat every so often and still be devoted and on plan. You just can't let treats get out of control. I weigh myself everyday for accountability and reign it in when need be. This is not as bad as you are thinking, it does get easier as time moves on.

Thank you both. I'm excited about the future, just ready to pull the trigger on this already!

Depending on your pouch, you WILL be saying goodbye to certain foods forever. Pizza, breads, fibrous things, such as veggie burgers do NOT sit well so I just avoid them. French fries are gone as well. Big, huge gulps of water are a thing of the past. I'm a sipper now. Sucks, but being almost 300 lbs sucks more.

Absolutely normal. And there are foods you should say goodbye to forever and RNY can make that pretty easy. I think your next 6 months are key and if you just follow instructions you can have glorious summer with a new body. Congrats and good luck!

Yes, totally normal! I had a pout fest (in private) when I was not able to have a slice of cake for my birthday... Oh, how childish I now see I was! I vowed to make foods that make me happy, with a healthier twist whether it be low/no sugar, low carb/high protein. The following year, I made myself a protein mug cake put a candle in that sucker and enjoyed a scoop of protein-packed ice cream. I stopped focusing on the things I couldn't have and started looking at all the things I COULD enjoy! With the help of a mental health pro, I learned that food does not make a celebration and started really looking at the experiences spent with those around me. Before WLS, I would sit in the corner with a plate of food... now I am up, walking around and enjoying the company!

You've got this! Don't get me wrong... sometimes, my mind still tries to play tricks on me and I am 12 years out from lap band and 6 years out from my revision to RnY but use the methods taught at your support group meetings, surgeons office and/or mental health pro to help you through those "cravings".
