What's on your (PHOTO FRIDAY) Menu, RNYers?
My stepdaughter will be 18 in March...she did her driving class, passed the test and got her permit, but hasn't done the driving practice with an instructor. She is getting a bunch of uber gift cards for Christmas. It's the WEIRDEST thing. Who doesn't want the freedom and independence that driving affords?!
My youngest daughter will be 20 in June. Flat out refuses to get her driver's license. We even bought her a vehicle when she was in driver's ed.
She is terrified of driving. In addition, it's different now. Kids/teens don't have to leave the house to hang out. They can skype, video chat, FaceTime, etc., and in groups.
I had my license, a car and was out the door on the day I turned 16.

Let it begin with me.

It is a fascinating phenomenon, not driving until well into their twenties. My nephews, and my best friend's kids were that way. I was standing at the DMV with my birth certificate in hand on the very first day I was eligible.

I did not want to drive. I rode the bus, walked, or rode my bike everywhere in the small town where I lived. I was almost 22 when I moved out of town and had to learn to drive. I saw a car as an expense. I loved all the exercise I got.
My son did not want to drive, but I forced the issue when he was 17 because I had to drive him everywhere.
The first week he drove he got a ticket for making a U-turn. When we went to court the judge asked him why he did it. He said that he looked at his watch and it was almost midnight and he knew his mom would be worried so he made a U-turn to get home right way.
The judge was impressed by the considerate young man and only fined him $5.
What actually happened was that he was passing Taco Bell and saw a girl he wanted to talk to so made the U-turn to go back. But the cop arrested him instead. I just was shocked that kids can lie so convincingly.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
I'm not sure if it's a regional thing. Here in CA you can't go anywhere without a car. All kids get their license while still a jr in high school. The parking permits at the high school are a hot commodity. First come first served. If you are unlucky enough to be born late in the year, or is it early, and you get your license mid year, you are out of luck for parking permits. Both my kids got theirs the minute they turned 16. It was embarrassing for them for their mom to drive them to school. But again, we are in an area where there is close to zero public transportation. School busses are also looked down on if you are a jr or sr.
