Gallbladder Question
Can someone help me understand the role the gallbladder plays in Gastric Bypass and why it normally needs to be removed?
I'm 3 months post surgery and having gallbladder removed in a month. Not sure why as I haven't had any issues.
Gallbladder was supposed to be removed during my bypass but because the surgery took so long my doctor elected to hold off.
Your info/feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Gallbladder issues arise after massive weight loss, either with surgery or without.
Back in the day, some surgeons advocated taking it out during WLS. Very few do that anymire, questioning the ethics of removing something that works just fine.
I dont know the percentage of those who need their gallbladder removed. Its not uncommon, but I would guess it's 5 or 10 percent, maybe. I lost a ton of weight and have never had a days trouble with mine.
The choice is yours. If you are experiencing no problems with your gallbladder, I would absolutely not have it removed.

I had surgery in 2007 and my gallbladder removed in 2017. The same surgeon did both and said there was some sludge and a small stone. I had not had problems with it, but the surgeon who said it was perfectly fine ten years earlier told me it was just a matter of time until I would have had an attack.
It is a judgement call of your surgeon.

Unless there is problem with it - I would not remove it.
GB plays many roles in our system, not only bile storage. Some people had side effects after the GB is removed, some get runs, while others can get constipated.
In the past they would take appendix out, because the medical society did not understand tits significant role in our system. Now they treat GB as a spare part we don't need.
