Detox? Are they safe post-WLS?
As some of you know, my life has been insane physically, mentally and emotionally for many months culminating in our recent move. I have truly been burning my candle on both ends for a long time and now that the move is completed I am trying to adjust my routines and habits into a more supportive lifestyle. I have been mega hydrating (shifting from lots of coffee to at least 180 oz of water a day), eliminating the sugar and resting my body as much as possible. Unfortunately I've had alot of gastric problems and dense protein doesn't always agree with me but I've been lucky that Lactaid cottage cheese and CarbMaster yogurt goes down pretty well, both of which are good sources of protein and low in carbs.
I've had several people tell me that I should do a prolonged detox of my body. One person suggested drinking only celery juice for a week. I'm certainly not a registered dietitian, but I know full well that most detoxes aren't actually good for the body, especially post-WLS.
That said, have you done a detox? If so, did you find it helpful or healthful? Did you end up feeling better or worse? Do you know of any reputable scientific evidence of whether a detox is useful or safe for folks how've had WLS?
Thanks for your input!
Janet

I think you never need a fasting detox. It is a fad. It is deprivation. It is soul sucking hard.
Girl your plate is full.
You get to eat and do other things that nourish you.
Caregiving....you gotta do some things that nourish your body and soul so you have enough energy to give back.
Fuck that fast and those people who are telling you it's a good idea.
I could never have written a more correct, and eloquent, response.

Hi Janet!
Detoxes are bunk. Plain and simple. Your body is a highly efficient machine. Your liver and kidneys are superheroes, and you are doing the absolute best thing for them with your increased water intake. If detoxes truly worked, we wouldn't have so many people on waiting lists for kidneys, livers, or so many dialysis systems.
I just turned 45, and after being on a diet since I was 11, and having this surgery 10 years ago, I am done. No more fad diets, no more magic pills, nothing. I have started feeding myself well (physically and spiritually) and stopped focusing on the numbers. It's just exhausting. Now, I will tell you that as a vegetarian en route to being a vegan, I have to be super conscious of everything I eat so that I can ensure I am getting high quality food.
If you are looking for something to give you a reset, I recommend looking into intermittent fasting. However, I would encourage you to read as much about it as you can, and to start slowly. I love it when I do it, but I make sure I am focusing on other things as well such as my breathing, my self talk and my frame of mind.
I realize I didn't answer your question about scientific research on detoxes, but...drinking nothing but celery juice for a week sounds asinine. Of course you would lose weight, you're not taking anything in!
Here's what I've added to my life, and it's been so helpful. If you are able, and interested, I would highly recommend doing some of the following activities:
Stretching
Meditation (so many good videos on YouTube)
Yoga (even beginner, very gentle, corpse pose, child's pose...it's so relaxing)
Listen to some positive frequencies. 432mhz can be found in many relaxing melodies, again on YouTube or spotify. Even my dogs calm down when I have it going.
Most importantly, when you have a lot going on...be kind to yourself.

Cleanses are complete and utter bull**** and anybody trying to scare you about "toxins" probably has something to sell you.

If you really feel like you want to flush out your system, drink a boatload of water. Your liver and kidneys will appreciate the help.

Whoever told you to drink only celery juice for any length of time is a quack. Janet, given all you have going on, it would be surprising if you weren't having tummy troubles! Stress, anxiety, etc sometime**** us hardest right after we get through the precipitating issue -- this might be the first time in months your body has had the freedom to actually respond to all you've been through.
Be kind to yourself, stick to your good routines where you can and do not do any crazy detox! As everyone else said, they are pretty much bunk!
