RNY 13 years ago...Impossible Whoppper not sitting well!!
Hi there. It's been 13 years as of yesterday for my RNY. I have known over the years what sits well with my pouch and what does not. For some reason the Impossible Whopper from Burger King will just sit there. It really doesn't move through my system very well. I don't get a "Mini Dump"...Heart racing or sweating. It's just there is something in that thing that doesn't work for me. Have any of you had this problem?? Don't know if it's been asked. Thanks, Brian
It doesn't sit well because it's not actually food. You should only eat things that are food.

From what I understand the Impossible Whopper is 100% derived from plants. I the fast food world that could mean so many different things. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebNeUihciDI
Here is the link to the making of the Impossible Whopper. Maybe it will enlighten you as to what in it is making it difficult to digest. I hope you figure it all out.
As a vegetarian who is super happy to actually have a choice in a fast food setting, I can assure you that it is in fact food. It is a blend of potato and soy proteins.
Here's the info: https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-in-impossible-burger -ingredient-list-2019-5
When a burger joint advertises "100% beef", that doesn't mean they are grinding up a high quality steak for you and serving it to you for $3 or so. It means that every ingredient in there came from a cow. Tendons, fat, gristle, tallow, everything. That is all considered 100% beef,
I'm not here to convert anyone but please don't spread misinformation about food that is really important to some of us and is giving us options other than meat consumption. I encourage everyone to eat with their conscience and that includes anyone who eats meat. It's not fair to call this "not food".

Methylcellulose is not food. Neither is cultured dextrose, soy leghemoglobin, mixed tocopherols, zinc gluconate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, and several other ingredients. We can argue about whether soy-protein concentrate is food, but I would say it isn't. Certainly nothing natural or healthy.

I understand where you're coming from and what you are trying to say. However, to be fair it's not like this is a lump of methylcellulose that has some "meat powder" sprinkled on it, and is being passed on as a meat substitute. There is actual science and vetting that has gone into the production of these type of meat substitutes. To be fair, I don't eat these things regularly, because as someone who doesn't eat meat, I don't feel the need to go seek out meat substitutes because there's so many other things to eat.
Impossible "meat" also contains 2% or less of:
- Potato protein
- Methylcellulose
- Yeast extract
- Cultured dextrose
- Food starch, modified
- Soy leghemoglobin
- Salt
- Soy-protein isolate
- Mixed tocopherols (vitamin E)
- Zinc gluconate
- Thiamine hydrochloride (Vitamin B1)
- Sodium ascorbate (vitamin C)
- Niacin
- Pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6)
- Riboflavin (vitamin B2)
- Vitamin B12
The other 98% is:
- Soy-protein concentrate
- Coconut oil
- Sunflower oil
You may not feel that soy-protein is food but again, it is an important source of nutrients and protein for some people. Pea protein, same thing.
In a perfect world everyone would eat nothing but real vegetables, and real meat (if they choose to do so), but it isn't always that easy.
That's the good thing about our diets, we have choice. No one is forcing anyone to eat anything they don't want to. My entire point was that it is nice to have a choice.

I'd like to see your degree in nutrition and food science.
I agree that fast food is not good for anyone, but organic/all natural food is also pseudoscience with no evidence it's any better health-wise then conventional food.
That all being said the impossible whopper has 630 calories when a regular one is 660. Whoop de do. It has 12 grams of sugar (normal whopper has 11) and 58 grams of carbs (Whopper has 49).
In other words you'd be better off in terms of health eating an actual whopper.

I think what Grim is trying to say is all FAST FOODS are not real foods. They are all processed in sort of way whether it is "beef" or "vegetable". It would be best for folks to stick with real meats and real vegetables.
I understand what you are both trying to say, for sure. But for those of us who don't want anything to do with "real" meat, surely it's understandable that we are excited to have another option? It's absolutely NOT something I would eat daily, or probably even weekly. However, if it helps ONE person have a meatless meal then I am all for it. Anything we can do to help sustain life on this planet is a good thing.
I will spare you and everyone else my vegetarian reasons. I understand it can be exhausting listening to people who are passionate about their views. There's a reason that the joke "how do you know if someone is vegan? Oh just wait, they will tell you" is funny. Because people are passionate and want others to care.
Anyhow, I appreciate the fact that this has thus far remained less about emotions/feelings, and more about actual food.

Personally if a fast food place is going to offer a meatless options I would rather them do a grilled portabella mushroom as a burger instead of a processed soy thing. Many folks are beginning to have soy allergies and with so many vegetarian/vegan items being made from soy it makes it hard for them to stick to a healthy eating.
My DIL is a vegan and even she has been having issues with many of the soy based products. I gave her 6 eggplant and a bag full of peppers from my garden so she could make things to eat without having a reaction.
