Gina! I went by Kathywii 17 years ago! In answer to question. I still have the same side affects after all these years that i did in the beginning. I can still only eat a small amount. I eat what i want but not much. I eat pizza bit only one slice. One egg etc. My nose runs, I sneeze, I get weak. I absolutely cant eat ice cream or i dump so bad i am in fetal position. I cant eat fatty foods - i can eat candy sadly. I am at goal weight but still watch it. Good luck

I still eat to stay alive. I realize i am very blessed as i dont experience hunger. So for me anyway the benefits are still here. Best wishes

I am over 11 years post op. 10-15 lbs below my goal right now. Eating the way we are supposed to eat post-op, and avoiding grains, alcohol, and dairy due to allergies - makes it difficult to actually gain weight now. Seriously. So in a way my surgery works better for my weight now, than in year 4-5.

Some things are very similar to when I was just one or 2 years out. Others, like dumping, changed. I introduced more carbs and sugar in my diet, and because of that, my body became less sensitive to sugars. I used to dump on 6- 10 gram or less of sugar.. Because I pushed the limit farther and farther, I tolerate more sugars. But I still have Reactive hypoglycemia, but over the years I learned how to prevent it. In the first 2 years I avoided sugars and carbs overall. That was the time I didn't need a lot dump.

I can see how some people can get used to sugary items. One bite at a time. The first year is critical to develop new habits. Critical. Eating sugars, and carbs during the first year can make some of us less sensitive, and that long term can cause a significant regain long term.

Avoiding alcohol is critical IMO. I never had issues pre RNY. Post op - I never thought it would be. I was wrong. There was time when I medicated myself with alcohol. During those times I also gained a lot of weight very fast. I medicated my anxiety, pain, abdominal cramping, abdominal and joints pain. I don't think I passed into a full blown alcoholism, but my body got used to it. I never really liked being drunk, but I like how it could take away the abdominal pain.

Last year I decided to stop drinking. I did not really like the other side effects of drinking, the being drunk. I don't miss it. We have alcohol at home, but it doesn't bother me.

Long term - be careful with any sweets and too many carbs, and alcohol. Any alcohol.

Sweets and carbs -the more I eat the more I want and the more I can eat. Same with alcohol. A smaller amount of alcohol affects me, but as fast as it affects me, the feeling wears off faster and I sip more looking for a familiar "I feel-good, pain free". Many people undermine how alcohol affects them.

Good luck.

Hala n I r like two tot opposites but w agree on some things like alcohol ... dangerous fattening and aging .

I hate fat she literally lives on a diet of what sounds like nothing BUT fats ...def not doctor recommended . Try following ur post op docs diet ... low fats mostly fresh veg low fat dairy and daily first thing in the morning if you can excercise :)
