Hey everyone, Im having hip surgery Monday. They wanted to put me on Celebrex and also Aspirin for blood clots. Both of those are a no go. Im waiting for my Bariatric nurse to call me back and suggest alternatives.

Just wondering if anyone hear had any suggestions or any experience with surgery after RNY and what did you take.

Also, they gave me Percoets for pain but I'm really leary about them as well.

I've had two plastic surgeries since my RNY. I don't know if this relates to your situation or not, but I got heparin injections in the hospital for blood clotting, and I was sent home with hydrocodone after the first surgery and Tylenol #3 with Codeine after the second surgery (both of which I just took for the first three or four days)

Good luck on your surgery. I had a friend that had a hip replacement and they had her up and walking the next day, and she was back at work in a couple of weeks. We're all different, and as someone who can't tolerate narcotic pain meds I hear you on your concerns. Take care and get better soon!

I've also had heparin in the hospital and my GYN sent me home with a couple more days worth of self-injectables after my hysterectomy. I've used percocet after all of my post-WLS surgeries. It works well for me and i use it as needed but carefully monitored. Unfortunately I'm allergic to codeine so no Tylenol 3's for me. I know that doc's don't want to give out oxy or other opiods any more but Tylenol is useless and for those of us who can't have NSAIDS, it's really the only option. You could ask for a script for only 4-5 days worth and if you find you need more (especially to sleep), they can write a new script. Limits the amount you have access to at any one time.

One of my good friends just had out-patient (23 hour) hip replacement surgery and the STUPID doctor sent her home with Tylenol. 24 hours later she was back in the ER because she was passing out from the pain! They ended up giving her IV darvocet to bring the pain back under control. Advocate for yourself and get some pain meds before you leave from surgery. Also take them regularly for the first few days and not just when you are already in pain. Once you get behind, it is a real bear to get back under control.

The other thing that I had for pain with both m hysterectomy and PS was a pain pump that I had for the first 4 days post-op. It dripped a local anesthetic directly into my surgery site and even went home with me for a few days. It was amazing! Your anesthesiologist should be able to write for it since it is for pain management. By the end of the 4th/5th day, I was over most of the pain hump and needed less oral meds.

Hope that helps!

Im bringing the Percoset's with me..its Arthroscopic so hopefully I can deal with the pain by taking those..

Im usually pretty good with pain so we will see..My RNY nurse approved me to take coated aspirin, just yesterday, as long as I took Omeprazole with them for blood clots..
