Hello from the other side
Hello! So many new faces, it's been a really long time since I have been here! I hope everyone is doing well.
I had my RNY in 2009, so I am over 10 years out. My intent in coming back is to reach out to like minded individuals who have been where I am, and to connect with people trying to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
That being said, I am also open to talking about what it's like 10 years out as well.
Hope y'all have a great day!!

Hello!
I love reading about what life is like for people who are more than 5 years out. I welcome your input and participation in the threads. Has everything gone smoothly for you or have you had any surgery related bumps in the road? What has post op been like for you up to now 10 years?
Thank you for coming to post here on ObesityHelp
Hello y'all!
Thanks for the warm welcome (back..?)! I have missed this place.
So here's my long story short:
I have been extremely fortunate health wise thus far. The only major issues I have had, were mostly self inflicted. I am reactive hypoglycemic which is very manageable provided I eat the right things, and don't pu**** I know that when I do have an issue, it's been my own doing.
I suffered with ulcer like symptoms back in 2013, which again I will attribute to my own doing. I have since corrected the issues with my eating and nutrition, and thankfully haven't had any further issues.
That being said, I am scheduling an appointment with my surgeon's office to ensure that at 10 years out, I am not vitamin deficient or lacking in some vital way.
I was very fortunate that my surgery went extremely well, and the healing was basically what you would expect a healthy person to recover and heal as. Even at ten years out, I still have quite a bit of restriction. One cup of food is about my limit, and the one rule I stuck hard and fast to about 95% of the time was the drinking after eating. I believe this truly has helped me maintain the integrity of my pouch.
My husband (now ex) and I both had the RNY in 2009. Alas, we did fall into the cross addiction and divorce category that is so common after this surgery. That being said, I don't regret the surgery for ONE minute and I know it's allowed me to continue to live the best life possible. I can happily report that we are both remarried, and better for being so.
I would love to answer any other questions, but let me tell you what I know for sure:
The first 18 months and losing was amazing, but also mind altering. To this day, I still see my body very large regardless of the weight loss.
The rules are in place for a reason. The more you follow them and the more you put into it, the better off you will look, feel and be long term.
Losing the weight is physical. You have to do the mental work. You have to fight against weight gain everyday, not just with your physical actions of eating, and making good choices but with your head as well. My inner fat girl (who I absolutely love) pulls me back to my old habits all the time. Understanding and recognizing that is key.
Cross addictions is real. Your doctor will tell you that it's ok to have a drink a year out, etc. Don't. You don't need it, it's empty calories and the risk of alcoholism is so high, it's simply NOT worth it. I am happy to discuss in DMs if you need to reach out and talk to someone. Remember, SOBER IS SEXY!
I am here to talk to any and every one, and to encourage you all to be the very best. I think after all this time, there's still SO much for me to learn and I'm happy to have found my way back here.
Much love and light!
Christina
