Fastest way to reverse protein deficiency?

Yay steak!

I bought a cheap charcoal grill for the summer, just so I can up my carcinogen intake. Briquettes soaked in lighter fluid. mmmmm.

Seriously though it makes meats taste l amazing, just like they used to when I was a kid. Working on planning out my grilling time so I get more than just one meal out of each adventure with the grill.

So this looks to be a more common problem (the protein intake) than I had thought it would be. Posted here specifically in case anybody else faced/was facing the issue. Honestly didn't realize we still needed to keep our protein SO high this far out. Learning to be proactive.

Thanks Julie.

If your weather isn't great for grilling outdoors all the time, indoor grills make the meat taste almost as good! We have this one and we use it all the time for doing burgers and chicken breasts. I'll put a couple of drops of liquid smoke in the sauce or marinade and it does the trick :)

Couple things:

1) indoor/smokeless grills are amazing and so worth the money.

2) Protein shakes aren't the devil... I drink one everyday at almost 3 years out. I've never lost any hair and it replaces my morning Starbucks drink. Less money, more protein, and taste great. I've spoken with several nutritionists that wish more people would use them. Yes real food is better but when the choice is not eating anything for breakfast because I just can't eat before 10am (or after 8pm). Having that 3 carb, 20g of protein shake in the morning is a great choice. Does everyone need them? No, but don't bash them because you can get your protein in without. I could do it without seeing as I get in 130-150 a day, but my surgeon like my levels and I'm doing great. Why should I mess with what works? Good-luck finding what works for you.

Liz a little clarification:

1) I actually do have (and use) an indoor grill. The outside contraption was a treat for the summer once I found out I'd likely be eating a lot more meat.

2) Not sure how my comments on shakes were "bashing". I commented because many people eventually get to the point where they are working on staying satisfied and not hungry consuming the smallest amount of calories reasonable. Solid foods generally keep us satiated for longer than liquids. Shakes are liquids.

I'll also say it again: I am 10 years out. At three years out I was still having a shake a couple of times a week. (I also weighed over 30 pounds more back then than I do today!) But that was seven years ago. My eating has now fully morphed into the food plan I mentioned in your comment #2. This doesn't mean I believe my diet is better. It means my diet is different. In seven years, yours might be too.

You've found what works for you right now and I'd never encourage or imply messing with that. Post op life is different for almost every one of us it seems. Any comment that appeared directed at your shake drinking was unintentional. =)

That was a general don't bash shakes, not directed at anyone. I apologize if it came off that way. I 100% agree with you that post op life is different for everyone! Hope you find what works for you soon!

How do you know you have a protein " deficiency" ? Is it because your kidneys don't work properly and couldn't you harm yourself by pushing protein if your kidneys can't break it down?

The countries with the highest protein consumption especially meat consumption have some of the highest chronic disease rates and very low life expectancy especially if you start counting at say age 60. This despite very little advanced medical care in most developing countries.

In other words you're far more likely to live to 100 in Kazakhstan Turkey or the remote mountains of China than in the US Britain or Sweden or Finland if you've made it to middle age .
