Sleeping pills / medication absorption after roux-en-y?

I am seriously considering this surgery due to ongoing regain of weight. I will likely need to go with this surgery as I can't do a sleeve due to bad reflux history.

My main concern is that I have chronic lifelong insomnia. Due to other medical issues I require benodiazapine sleeping pills & ambien, and I will likely require them for the rest of my life.

Has anyone else been on sleeping pills BEFORE & AFTER the roux-en-y surgery, and did you notice any difference is absorption?.... if so, how much extra medication did you require.

Thanks in advance.

I had RNY 11 years ago on July 8th. I've had sleep problems since 1998. I took Ambien before and after surgery and it knocked me out; however, my PCP wanted me off Ambien and I had some strange things happen when I took Ambien and didn't go right to bed.

Since then, I have taken many O-T-C sleep aids. I tried Trazadone but it knocked me out for about 18 hours. I currently take a sleep aid because if I don't I won't sleep.

I don't take sleeping pills, but I take other medication. Absorbtion can be different for everyone. What would work for one person, may not work for someone else.

I noticed change how well I absorb medication if I take them by themselves, with jus****er or tea, or taken with food. Even after 11 years post op, I think I still malabsorb fats and proteins. I had my GB removed app 6 months after my RNY, and some fats are not digested or absorb very well. Taking meds while I also eat food with that type of fat, could cause malabsorption of that food and any medication I take with that.

I have taken them both before and after RNY and not really noticed any difference. Ambien works to put me to sleep but doesn't keep me asleep. I now take Lunesta and I usually get 6 hours of sleep. We are all different but it isn't something I would worry about. After RNY we cannot take time released medications.

Just curious, from a medical angle. Do you know if there is an organic cause, for the insomnia? Have you sleep studies done?

I am wondering if the weight loss, in itself, might be beneficial, for the insomnia

I also suffer from insomnia. Unfortunately I'm allergic to Ambien. I take Trazadone and haven't had any absorption issues.

I was was diagnosed with apnea prior but also straight insomnia previously (basically a problem not found diagnosis). I was hopeful that after bypass I would finally feel rested. Unfortunately that was not the case and while I no longer have apnea I still suffer from insomnia. So you are smart to look into this.
