Can I jump in here, even though the question was not addressed to me?
Our sons are the same age so mine is going through the college stuff. He did the ACT back in April. At the moment he is doing a one week workshop for essay writing for college admissions. He is also doing a summer stint down in UCLA for his major just to make sure that's what he wants to do. The whole shabang of college dorm, meal plan, classes, etc.
OK, butting out!

You are welcome in, of course! Even though I have one already in college I feel like I am going through this process for the first time as a parent, because my daughter took such an odd approach to the decision process.
She only applied to one school, didn't want to do any visits until after she was accepted and didn't really want any help from her parents with respect to any part of the process. Just independent, I guess.
Does your son know where he wants to apply to?

For both kids we hired a college counselor. This way I'm not the bad guy nagging them for application deadlines or anything else. With our daughter it worked out great, she ended up going to a college she hadn't considered until the college counselor brought it up. Did the whole college tour (I think she visited 6 colleges) came back in love with the one the counselor had recommended.
Our son's only requirement is that he wants to stay in CA and as close to the coast as possible (surfing). He and I did a college road trip back in April and visited 4-5 colleges. I guess at this point it all depends on his gpa and his ACT about where he gets in. UCs are very competitive but we are crossing fingers. Even CA state colleges like San Diego State are very picky. If it was up to our son San Diego State would be the one. Not so much UC San Diego but San Diego State. I'm cool with having at least one kid in CA instead of the other side of the country, so wherever he gets in I'll be happy. Come fall we will stress about applications.
